Not going to argue the OS/X vs Windows bit, it's each to their own. Vista is as reliable as OS/X, just as pretty, but it's so much easier to get software and hardware for Windows. Apple tend to be more expensive than the equivalent PC, despite the hardware being roughly the same now.
If you are interested in an Apple, here is one for £563, you'll be hard pressed to buy cheaper.
Only thing is, check that the camera you intend to use has appropriate OS drivers. If it's specialist kit (and it sounds like it is) then you may have problems finding drivers for any OS other than what the manufacturer supports (what ever that may be).
more unqualified tosh being spouted, where is the difficulty in getting mac software? or hardware for that matter, what a complete load of armchair expert bolloxs.

Got 3 pc's here 2 with xp and new laptop HP G6000 £399 got vista 32 bit and to date after a couple a months the only prob I have had is it not reconising my old card reader other than that have yet to establish what all these problems are with vista.
If you travel a fair distance between jobs you could even consider a small inverter to keep it fully charged.
As they say you pay for what you get, cheaper laptops are usually compromised by the battery, i also have an acer was only £300 works great but battery only lastes 2 hrs tops got a new battery and it lasts 4 hours now but did cost £80.
Right I now have some more information this is a n SP 30 Rheostat control 6V 20 watt microscope with polariser analyser whichis coupled to a minicam usb 2 (1.3 mil pix) and stated Vista compatible.
Hope this helps with determining what lap top I need.

Not like you to be so forthright Al!
(Definition: forthright - directly and without evasion; not roundabout; "to face a problem squarely"; "the responsibility lies squarely with them"; "spoke forthright (or forthrightly) and to the point").

No tosh at all. As a Windows user I know that pretty much any piece of hardware I buy will have the relevant drivers available for me (well, 32bit anyway, 64bit is slightly different). I know that the vast - vast majority of websites with downloadable software will have a Windows version of the software.
Not saying that you can't get hardware/software for a Mac, but it is a whole lot easier to get it for Windows.
Oh, and not really an arm-chair expert. I've been working in software development, and software/hardware support for nearly 20 years now, so I hope I've gained at least an inkling of the lay of the land.
I'll try to avoid this descending into a pointless and circular argument but, for me, the key is that whilst it can be harder to get software and hardware for a mac it is not impossible and, more importantly, it actually works. The point has been made elsewhere that the majority of problems with Vista are actually down to poor third party software and this tends to be avoided with Apple.
I agree that, unless you're a very skilled programmer, Windows is much more flexible than OSX and easier to customise and control but most users, including it seems JB, are not interested in that and just want something that goes on the internet, holds and organises photos and music and can be used as a word processor. For that, given the reliability and, yes, extra nice touches and looks a mac is currently untouchable.
Thanks for all the information I see there are keen favourites on both types of system.
You know me I break out in a cold sweat at the thought of doing things computery.
My daughter was the one who got me onto this site a few years ago I still have trouble sometimes.
Anyway a computer guy showed me a CPC multimedia book last night it has an acer 1GB ddr" ram AND 80gb HARD DRIVE ALL SORTS OF OTHER NUMBERS AND STUFF GMA x3100 graphics vista etc .
At £299 pounds I hope this will do the trick I am with computers like cars if they have 4 wheels stop and start I don't care who makes them just so long as it's burgundy.
Just a quick thought. Are there other people using this camera system that you can talk to and find out what they are using. Also they might be able to tell you what software is required.
