    A few Q's first

    1. How long will you be on the road

    2. How many pics / day

    3. Do you need to view them while away

    4. Method of transport

    5. UK or abroad

Yup, going to need some more info. Do you want to be able to view the pics, or just take them off the memory card?

If the latter, there are a number of cheap devices that will copy your memory card to a hard-drive, eg http://www.bobatkins.com/photography..._flashpac.html, or you could just buy a very large CF card.

If you want a cheap laptop, then there is the Dell Vostro range starting at £169 +VAT and delivery. http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/pr...dt1&l=en&s=bsd. Add a USB card reader for a few £££'s and you're away. If you plan on using it away from a power supply then make sure you upgrade the battery to the larger 6 cell one. If you buy a Dell, get a www.QuidCo.com account and buy through there for an additional 5% discount (plus good discounts through many many other retailers etc).

Thanks guy's I need to view the pictures from a microscopic mini cam at the time of investigation (forensic science) I will then be able to freeze frame and save the selected image while on location.

I may be mobile for several day's so will need to charge from the car or hotel/ B&B overnight.

My idea is them to save "down load" images onto my PC at home.

        Thanks JB

As you have probably realised by now over the years computers and I do not get on.

Buy an Apple Macbook. Perfect for photography and much easier to use than a PC.

Is this video format? Just asking as you mention "freeze frame"

Yes it is a micro camera which you can move around and when happy click for a picture. So It needs to do both.

What is an apple like are really expensive.
              Cheers JB

                They start at £700

                http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObje...family/macbook

They are industry standard for graphic design and photography, but the main benefits are they very very rarely crash, don't need endless dicking around with to make things work and the operating system is so much better than windows it's unbelievable.

I'm sure you could get a cheaper, more powerful windows laptop but the benefit of a mac is you take it out of the box and it works, then continues to work for ever. I've had mine for over four years now without once looking for the 'control panel' to fix something, having to restart it or not getting something to install.

Not going to argue the OS/X vs Windows bit, it's each to their own. Vista is as reliable as OS/X, just as pretty, but it's so much easier to get software and hardware for Windows. Apple tend to be more expensive than the equivalent PC, despite the hardware being roughly the same now.

If you are interested in an Apple, here is one for £563, you'll be hard pressed to buy cheaper.

Only thing is, check that the camera you intend to use has appropriate OS drivers. If it's specialist kit (and it sounds like it is) then you may have problems finding drivers for any OS other than what the manufacturer supports (what ever that may be).

Make & model of camera would be useful as a lot will depend on the connectors it's got.

No, don't do that, Vista already works fine now.
