          To clarify, look at the tops of the batterys, the poles are reversed on one, so that the +ive terminal is next to the engine on both batterys, and the -ive's are on the outside.

                It refers to the connections alone. The neg is on the outer edge, closest to the bodywork. So obviously, left hand side, right hand side.
