    Re

If you are serious, I hope you are not!

I would suspect something to do with the freezing temps. we been getting!

Cold weather can sometimes do wierd things to metal contacts and the like.

Keep an eye on it and see does the cold make it do bizarre things with the electrics.

I am well and truly serious

It hasn't happened again since the battery was reconnected but that's when the bulb was working. Now it's not. I have a feeling that when I replace the bulb again ..............well, who knows, it might just go for a spin up the road itself at midnight!

You said - you turned the lights back off?

Can I ask how you did that? if you didn't turn the light stick - what did you switch off?

Also - have you changed any lamps recently (since having this problem) could be an in correct lamp fitted somewhere shorting back to earth.

COuld be a fault with your radio maybe creating feedback with the cold weather etc........

anyway - for the lights to come on - a supply must be connected to your relay coil to pull in the contacts and bring on the lights.....

another quick thought? DO you have any trouble with inside lights coming on and off when you get in the car?

The door contacts have perminent power supplies and if you got a feedback on something and your light flicked on at 3 - maybe it went through that and pulled your lights on?

Hope that give you a few things to look at

Worth checking the earth connection on that bulb contact or the headlamp stalk contacts. Surf's are wired with a switched earth (i.e. the live wire is connected direct to the battery and the wire to earth is switched), so if there is an earth fault in the lighting circuit it's probably causing the headlight circuit to complete itself and, hey presto, you have lights!!

Alternatively, you could just have a VAMPIRE car!!

how does that work? surely that would mean that all the earths are fused rather than the lives?

wow that's scary...like the time when the heater vents on my surf turned into mouths and told me to get out and bury that cat...spooky things, surfs.
i swear, it was like that when i got here...

Fuses always go as close to the +V source as possible. Where the circuit is switched is irrelevant.

By the sounds of it, I'd go with the dodgy contacts & heat expansion/contraction theories.

mmmm, I had to turn the stalk on then off to put the lights off again. I only replaced the tail bulb and the interior lights are OK no probs. The radios fine, although it plays crap songs occasionally.
