Just going on a slightly different tack Andy/Nigel, have you ever considered using a forum software that is possibly less resource intensive than VB? (Working on the assumption that server load itself is one of the problems you are having).

That's what we're talking about, bringing your talent to the table - what sort of work would be involved in moving to a Unix/Linux environment and not losing any of the data stored???
I suggested that to Koi, just after I changed mine
One suggestion for financing the site but keeping it free for newbies and lurkers is: Annual Site Costs/Number of fee paying members = Annual membership fee.
How about deleting accounts not posted from, for say one month after creation? But e-mail the user before deletion asking for a contribution.
Tiered memberships is a great idea, as is micro shops and affiliate links to Milners, LAS, Tony (sorry, but you make money from here too), 4Crawler and Rough Trax.
What needs to be remembered is that individually, most of the ideas in this thread won't be enough, but collectively they could keep the forum alive.
If I remember correctly, Lucky would already have a good idea on that side of things. I believe his areas of interest/expertise include SQL, PHP and the like.
Just on another slight sidetrack, whereabouts, if you don't mind me asking, is the problem area or bottleneck? Is it merely the volume of data being transferred per week/month, searches impacting db performance, other limits or restrictions? What is causing most load and/or performance issues? (Other than VB).

You must be American, after the big fight against Netscape and Microsoft, Americans got very anti IE were as Europe and Asia are the biggest users of IE as all PC’s sold here come with IE pre installed and every one is used to using it at work and most IT Administrators will not upgrade due to licensing restrictions.
We all agree IE is not the best but as business decides we go with the majority of users and that is IE in the UK.
In order of the voted best browsers
1st Opera
2nd FireFox (Mozilla)
3rd IE
