  • One for the computery whiz type person

Folks I am for all who know me next to useless on all things computery.

So what can I do to save me deleting spam everytime I log into my email.

If it isn't rolex bl00dy watches, it's someone trying to sell prescription drugs.

Someone wanting my bank details I have never even been with the Nat West.

Mostly it's foreign languages I tried to put them in the ignore list but they always come back under some other guise.

Last straw was someone called luckyloosi or something similar and someone wanting to sell me viagra and a penis enlarger.

I maybe wouldn't mind if there was some sort of issue but I've got 3 kids thank you very much a messy buisiness but it had to be done.

So how do I go about stopping this cr4p I tried to log onto the interweb to get something down loaded a while ago but I finished up with some sort of spamware whatever, which did nothing.

I even had to send the computer back to the computer shop guy who sold it to get him to fix the problem he said it was something to to with malware.

I am familiar with tupperware but that's my lot.

If I go away for 4 days I can have over 200 emails when I get back it's getting annoying to the extreme.

I have 3 kids who use our family email address so the last thing I need is filth being sent by some low life scum.

    Cheers in anticipation.

What email prog do you use?

If you're not using it already, try Thunderbird - it's free and it's HERE.

It has quite a good junk filtering system, and will learn your preferences - you start by telling it which messages are junk, and it looks for similar patterns. You can also tell it to throw out messages with key words in ( like the V****** word!) or from specific senders, or even from specifed areas (by the IP address of the sender).

Use a good firewall/anti-malware/anti-virus package - eg AVG or Nod32 and have it set to auto-update every time you log on to the Net.
Norton Internet Security has a big name, and currently a very poor reputation - DON'T GO THERE! In my experience, it slows everything down, locks up when scanning, gets very picky about what other programs are present, and is impossible to remove without doing a complete format and reinstallation (the software equuivalent of melting it down and starting again from scratch ).

I'm sure someone else will be along with more detailed advice - PM me if I can be of any assistance.
    Peter

Who is your server? if its Btyahoo or some others they provide a free spam filter . Go to your web based mail and set it up to recognise spam it should then dump spam in a spam folder before it reaches you. Or depending on which e-mail client you use there could be a spam filter on that.

Ok I need someone to type very slowly for me instruction on how to get this working. I send delete spam to a folder and block sender but the list gets bigger and I can't make it deminish. I also check some emails with the message source bit so I can read it before opening it ( as a B&B with website we can't afford to miss bookings and with so many foreign visitors we have trouble deleting everything without checking it's a pain.)

Right got to go back tonight thanks JB

I don't know if it's the same with the free version of AVG, but in the bottom right corner of the screen where the clock is there should be an icon with 1 square split into 4 smaller different colour squares. Right click on it, click 'launch control centre', and in the window that pops up check that the 'Anti-Spam' component is installed and working, ie has a green tick next to it. If it does, highlight anti-spam the click properties in the bottom right corner of the control centre window, and make sure everything in the general tab looks like it's set up ok.

We have the score set at 70 and have messages marked and moved to a spam folder and it doesn't seem to let that much through.

I tried that just now it doesn't have an anti spam box to tick I have email scan for viruses but that's about it. Do I need to buy this as an add on.

                Cheers JB

AVG anti spam download is £31.95 per year for each computer every year, does everyone pay that much?

Sylpheed with the bsfilter plugin would be my advice, for local filtering. Your ISP's spam filters for remote filtering.

Sorry can't help with that, but i can't believe we pay that much. We run it on 6 machines that'd be nigh on £200 a year.

This is the Sylpheed Windoze binary:

                            http://sylpheed.sraoss.jp/sylpheed/w...in32_setup.exe

This is the bsfilter file location:

                            http://sourceforge.jp/projects/bsfilter/files/

With that bsfilter, if I remember correctly, you untar the package then copy one of the files into the Sylpheed directory. The instructions are up there somewhere on one of those two sites regarding the specifics.

Once you get this sorted out, can I make a couple of suggestions?

Firstly, keep your business PC, Laptop and e-mail addresses separite from your family stuff.

Secondly, never ever let your children, their friends, your friends, your customers, anywhere near your business PC! Your business PC is just that, it's not a toy it's a tool.

Thirdly, set up a Yahoo or googlemail account for each of you for personal use. That way when one starts to be spammed you can dump the e-mail address and create another one (telling those who need to know the new address). These accounts can be used via your existing e-mail client.

Fourth. Get rid of Outlook Express! A couple of other e-mail clients have been mentioned. I use Eudora pro and Thunderbird. Both are a country mile better than Outlook, never mind Outlook Express.

Currently 90% of all e-mail sent worldwide is spam, you'll get caught sooner or later! I have my own domain with about 10 aliases set up, when mail reaches my e-mail client it's filtered, using filters I have set up, to either specific folders or the bin. I get around 300 e-mails a day, the filters sort out all but 10 or 20 of them. Setting up filters is easy, setting them up to work together takes some time, it's a work in progress I'm afraid.

If you're seriously as PC illiterate as you say, you really need to get a good IT bloke (or blokess) to set everything up for you and maintain it afterwards. And get yourself some IT/PC training!
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's
