If, like mine the other day, the light is on around the outside, but there is no power, take the socket out, and push the contacts in at the bottom that would connect to the plug you push in (for sat nav etc.) then try it.....worked for me.
There is also a fuse wire around the bottom end of the socket, and if you push in and hold the lighter too much, you can burn this out - I've fixed one by just getting another piece of wire and soldering it onto the end.....
Worth a look at least!
