Wouldn't it actually be more likely to break something? A normal strap would put energy into the tow point fairly evenly, a kinetic strap peaks the energy. OK I guess for specially built tow points, but I wonder about the standard tow points.

I'd have thought a beginner would be better off with a normal strap, and there's plenty of good value ones on eBay if you aint gonna get stuck up to the axles in clay.

Standard tow points are not made to be used for recovery off road this is why accidents are happening and will continue to happen the same as i wouldnt use nicker elastic to go bugie jumping with it is not up to the job your asking it to do.So no i wouldnt use a kinetic rope with standard recovery points or straps or any thing else untill they have been changed to do the job safely

And as it's his first go, I doubt he'll have welded on new recovery points.

The originals are fine if you dont go crackers and belt off at 40mph with a kinetic strap attached to a Defender 130 in 2ft of Plains clay.

In past when someone is really stuck, we have used two trucks to pull them out, the tow truck also being pulled by another, this has worked when one is not enough and I think it's safer

                        Good for you!

Wasn't saying I disagree, just dont think kinetic is the way to go for a complete beginner.

I reckon if you take a beginner somewhere where they'll NEED a kinetic strap, you run the risk of putting them off the sport. It's his daily driver, so I doubt he'll wanna do stuff which could result in damage anyway...

Precisely. There's no way on earth he was gonna move that Defender!!! That could have been REALLY nasty!

My 3 tips for the day.

There's dangers involved in any recovery.

It's about being sensible, if it feels like you're pulling too hard or too fast, you probably are. Don't be afraid to ask the guy recovering you to calm down or let someone else do it, if you're the one being recovered.

                                A 50mm towball isn't a recovery point.
