Now they are trying to say I should remove it.

    Where do I stand????
Unfortunately for you if the company regs state as you say. You have no argument regardless of how long you have had it. The simplest way out is to agree to remove it while at work.
Failing that it depends on how much you value your job.If others have piercings IE. earrings use this as an argument and insist if you have to remove it they have to remove their visible piercings.
Your employer may have been lenient in the past but when someone complains action must be seen to be taken.

Earings are visable piercings, read the smallprint on your contract, and interpret literally, if it says no visable piercings, then tell them to get everybodiy to conform

You have to remove them if you got into Production or Warehouse.

Is it classed as visable though???

I would work on the "visable" aspect, and check what they interpret as "visable",

I was asked by an emloyer to remove my earings while at work, so I pointed out that the women were allowed to wear them, and that they may be guilty of sex discrimination, and went out and had four more pierced, just to make the point. They never asked me again.

Tried all those fancy plastic ones and ended up bitin' and smashin um - but it's a thought - I could swap it whilst in work though.

                      Oxford english dictionary:
                      Visible:

                      Capable of being seen,

                      perceptable to the eye

                      obvious to the eye

                      apparrent

                      publicly visible.

Make of that what you will, but I think in a court of law, they may have a case, unless you can use the religion angle,or if there is someone of another race who wears a piercing, you could try racial discrimination.

Deffo read your contract of employment though, it will be in there, ant if not, they have the problem

True but if you have never received the policy in the first place then it won't apply (I think?) ..Bibs have you had a policy and had to sign that you read and understood it?

Then there custom and practise that you have had the Tongue piercing for the last 4 year...without an issue...

                                Custom and practice
                                Resource type: Glossary item
                                Status: Maintained

In the context of employment law, the process by which a practice or benefit within a particular workplace or employer which has not previously been explicitly recognised or recorded in a contract of employment may become implied into the contract following regular informal usage. Such custom or practice must be "reasonable, certain and notorious" for it to amount to an implied term of the contract.

                                Would this count?
