After all that work completely stripping out the dash and replacing the heater matrix, replacing the main radiator (for the second time) and fitting a new rad cap, I overheated on the M6 this morning. I had only managed to drive 10 miles. I thought the worst.... head?
Turns out she had blown a hose clean off from the heater matrix and dumped the coolant and the nice new anti-freeze all over the engine bay.
A nice AA man towed me away to Burtonwood Services and said he would give her the once over with a pressure test etc... Replaced the spring clip with a new jubilee clip and did the pressure test... Pumped it to 5 Bar (about 70psi) and the pressure held.
He topped up with water and allowed her to warm up with the rad cap off to burp it. Nothing untoward happened, no frothing or gushing etc...
Rad cap on... checked the hoses and rad with an infra red thermometer and everything seemed fine. It looks like I didn't fit that hose on properly.
Continued on my way to Manchester and then poped off the expansion tank lid to check for any pressure and all was fine.
Presumably the pressure test will go some way to confirm there is nothing wrong with the head?
The good side of this is it's nice and warm inside the cab again.
It's now time to take the drive home and then dump the water to fill up with anti-freeze yet again.
