OR - sell it to me, and I'll get handy with a socket set, whip off the ARBs and side steps, pull the suspension apart and fit ES9000s all round, nice pair of L/C coils at the back, ball joint spacers, new upper and lower ball joints, all other bits I can find that would be needed, get a chance to Waxoil the underside as it's being done.....and I'll have Vader!!!!!!!!!

I'm starting to wonder if there may be life in the old girl still then (or at least a reasonable selling price).

Anyone know of any reputable types in the Nottingham(ish) area who might look at it with a professional eye and offer me a sensible price to get her fixed up and happy again?

Steve - I think to get it right, and fix all of it, you may be looking at a parts list of £700 - £900 to sort out all on the list. That's just buying the bits, not getting them on, so with the labour to stick it all on, you could be looking somewhere in the region of £1,200 - £1,500 as I reckon that's a few days of work to sort all of that out...

Quick estimate, excluding VAT and wishbones, and ignoring work that may be needed to be done on the spring mounts - I get about £750, then there is the wishbones, the fitting, poss exhaust, mounts, bushes for the rear axle.....

Oh - and if you don't have extended diff breathers fitted, you may want to have someone look at the diffs too - that much damage to the rest of the underside makes me wonder if the diffs and transmisson have any issues.....

Yeah, this is the bit that makes me think I could be well rid of it. It reminds me of the missus' old Metro. Once things started going, it was looknig like £700 of welding every year...

How does it drive at the minute? Is it rumbling at all?? And can it be driven away?

Drives the same as it always has - I've not noticed anything untoward apart from the klunk at full lock (which it's done for a while - stoppers?).

                  The clutch ticks though...

Is it auto or manual??? What do you mean by 'ticks'?

3.0TD manual with just over 92k on the clock which I've tried to look after (once a year to Toyota for a full service, oil changed every 4500miles by our local garage).

The clutch ticks when it's going at about 2000revs - stops if you depress the pedal. There's a thread about it on here somewhere...

The only other known issue is the back tailgate - that's rusted a bit across the top. I had to replace the two metal brackets on the bottom of the window in the spring as they'd corroded (hence the, 'not completely useless with a spanner...)

Have a look at Milner Offroad (in Derbyshire so not too far from you) and RoughTrax for most of the bits, look at Dewsbury Auto salvage for other parts (wishbones if you need to replace them). If it's not whining or rumbling, you may be OK on the diffs, but get the oil changed on them anyway, and for somewhere around £500-700 you could get the major bits on the list sorted, and get the rest done over time till the next MOT, then you should be OK...

The 'over time' bit I like, I can pretend the last cost never happened each time

The biggest issue I would have is finding someone to do the work for us then? Would love to give it all a go myself, but don't have the time, bravery or the room (live on a busy street where the 4Runner lives - so not good for repairs).

I've read and re-read the MOT report and apart from the brake pipes the rest dont make much sence.
Take it back and ask the machanic to show you he faults and see just what he is on about. It could just be a lot of ministry computer speak for the ball needs replacing or the anti-roll bar bush is shaged and may not be that bad.Things like side steps you can just take off.

Everything on failed list apart from the wishbone mount is easy, I have all the used parts you'd need here. Can stip all the brake pipes of a truck we're braking, all the wishbones etc.... to do all the advisories as well.

Wishbone mounts that badly corroded I've never seen, sure a wire brush and some chassis paint won't fix?

Throw the side steps away, adjust the wheel bearings and that nearly all.

Jesus. Are you sure this guy doesn't belong to the "Ban the 4X4 Liberation Front"??

Apart from the brake pipes, it sounds pretty OK. The rubber bushes might just be a bit perished, are they totally sh*gged or not bad, maybe this guy is a bit over zealous??

From what TonyN has said, I'd get it down to him and have the lot done. Looks in good nick, not worth making a scra*man rich sending it to the breakers. Get TonyN on the case. Job done.
