I had to fix a couple trucks after this has happened, one was OK, one was fawked.

It depends if its worn the crankshaft end much. To much play even with a new pulley on the shaft is gonna be not good. It'll just wobble on the crank and wear away even more over time, sadly means new crank needed.

Even a loose woodruff key is not so bad as long as the crank is OK.

          Fingers crossed.

(don't be tempted to weld the thing on like one truck I had here, it dosn't work!)

You may get away with building up the woodruff key hole with some metal putty stuff, then filing it out and smoothing it off so the new key dosn't wobble. But only if the only other option is a new crank, bodging stuff like that never tends to long term, but it might means you keep the truck.

Thanks Tony, Gamedawn's going to see if he still has the new pully monday (at work) so wont be able to tell if i've mullered the crank till i can try a new pully on it, worst case is a new short engine, think i'd rather do that than bugger about repairing this one, anyway i'll know more when i get a new pully,
till then fingers crossed, thanks again

i had a very similar problem a couple of months ago the slot in the crankshaft had totaly worn away on the thrust side i tried three different ways until i finaly sorted it im am now on to my 3rd pully wheel because on the other two ocasions it broke a peice of as yours has this is what i done i got a new woodruff key from milners or roughtrax cant remember which one they cost about £3 i had some stainless steel flat bar that was the same thickness as the key put the bar in a vice marked round the key and made one out of stainless steel checked the fit in the notch on the crankshaft then when it was ok clamped it in with moul grips got out my ark welder using the smallest rods i tacked the key to the shaft cleaned out any slag removed the grips tried the pully wheel to check the fit once that was ok i slowly built up the weld cleaning out the slag each time until it was just above the hight of the notch then grind back with my grinder job done that was five months ago and still going strong it would have cost me over a grand for a new shaft fitted. Another thing take out the rad this will give you alot more space to work plus an argone welder would be better but i didnt have one and they are exspensive hope this helps

hi ian ive just got your pm.mate can i call you a ........... .like tony and others have said,it really depends on how much the key way is damaged.all i can suggest is what has already be said.i would make a new key out of slightly thicker metal and then grind the metal to fit the keyway.i wouldnt weld or silver solder as the heat will damage the crank.you could try fitting the keyway and peening the slot with a centre punch so that its a tight fit.
