  • OMG wot have i done?

Who forgot to torque up the crankshaft bolt then? have i f**ked it or is there anything that can be done?, obviously new pully and key but the slot in the shaft is a bit buggered, cant see any way round that apart from a new crank, (new engine) and if thats the case it'll be the end of me surfing, just cant afford that,
what a pr@tt i am, i've noticed a louder than normal diesel knock type sound and thought i'll have a look at everything this comeing week, when i finished helping my bro in law, but started it up this morn and backed it out and there was a very bad banging, switched off right away and the pully come forward in my hand, woodruff key fell out and was red hot, found the bolt lodged between the rad and atf pipes,
    any advise? TonyN, God, anyone!!!
sorry the pics are not good, the round plastic bit is from the cover and the red spot is my blood
PS, Plumbob you were right a vacum pipe had come off

        Re

        Don't fret!

I'll bet that there is a way to sort it mate!

You could always use a small dremel etc. to sort out the woodruff key slot and if need be get a new key machined to fit.

The slot might be a wee bit deeper but you can always adapt a key to fit.

Obviously a new pulley and bolt but so long as the threads on the shaft are ok then I reckon you have a damn good chance of sorting it!

        Later!

Thread is ok Gary, just the slot had widened a bit on the thrust side, if you know what i mean, the old key has a groove worn in it one that side, i wound the bolt in (with a big nut on it to take up the gap) so i could turn the motor over and take a pic of the slot, bl00dy camera wont give me good defination close up tho,

It may be possible to silver solder a new woodruff key onto the crank pully and file off the excess solder, and although it will be permanently fixed,it should be enough to hold the pully in place.

There will be someone with propper engineering experience along soon to tell you if my idea is practical.

I hope it works out for you.

            Rob.

            Edit;

When I changed my crank pully, I got a woodriff key with it, but found that I didn't need it as mine is fitted to a tapered shaft with no key.

Guess that's a difference in the 2LT as opposed to the 2LTE.

Cheers Bob, never done silver solder i'm afraid, been trying to think of alsorts to fix it, even that chemicel metal stuff, or welding the pully on the end of the shaft, i've been removeing the timeing belt cover and pipework so i can see whats what, the keyway is right up (and just under) the belt cog tho, it'll be a job getting a dremel disc in there,

That stinks m8, after all the time & effort along with the blood , sweat & tears you've obviously spent on the truck it hardly seems fair. Give TonyN a shout he will tell you one way or another if it is fubar'd. Best of luck dude, sounds like you're gonna need it We'll keep everything crossed for ya!
