  • help me help me! got a new job

so someone finally wants me hehe. thanks to nero for the CV, i re-structured mine, and after about 5 days of it being on monster, jobserve and one other website my phone has been non-stop. ive had to turn interviews away, and put one back over a week.. but im going to cancel that now cos ive been accepted.
i just need some advice though from you clever lot
    i went to docklands for a 2nd line role for a permenant position @ 23k a year.
they said they had been looking for someone like me for a while and they have another position they want me on, it will be 1st,2nd and 3rd, working with other people, learning off them. (im very happy about that, as i want to learn lots more) the only thing is, he said he cant offer me the 23k, it will be 21k..
how can i push for more money? i would like at least 22, because buying a train ticket every month is going to cost a fair bit. this company is rapidly expanding, but i dont want to be taken the mick out off. i know im a push over.
he said he will give a pay review soon after i start (they will probably drop the money hehe joke)
the company only has about 50 employees, they arnt very big, which is a good thing i feel..
how would i construct an email saying i accept the position but need to push for more money, and / or would like them to guarantee the pay review later..
do you think im taking the mick?
    Oh Nana, what's my name?

    GOOD NEWS about the JOB.
You need to prove yourself to them for them to see you are worth more.

Tell them you will take the job at 23k you were previously offered. They are trying it on and trying to get you cheaply.

Say you'll work your way down to the lesser amount with the added responsibility of the other roles in due course.

        Congrats on the new job,

I don't know your age, but sometimes employers try to offer less money coz your're young, although that may now be illegal.

The £23k may have been a ploy to get people to go for the job, when all that was on the table to anybody was £21k.

Anyhoo, you need to explain your reasons for needing the full rate, and maybe show some travel costs, and let them know that you want the job, but do not want to be out of pocket.

£22k will be meeting them in the middle, and I'm sure they will be expecting a counter offer, as they have started to negotiate on the original offer.
It may be that they are concerned about a mssing qualification, or lack of specific experience in that particular field.

Send a letter accepting the position on the proviso that the starting pay is £21k and a pay review will be held within (say) 12 weeks, and have that written into the contract.

If, when the pay is reviewed, they decide not to give you the £23k, then at least you'll be earing, whilst looking for another job.

£2k is about £40 a week, so not worth losing £400 a week for.

A bird in the hand etc. etc.

Ive had 2 Agencies call me today. They were Impressed with my CV also.
One is a 48 Week contract @ £18k + Car The other is Permanent £20k + car + Benefits. I'd rather take the Permanent job even though the Money is better.

ok mate, im guessing you mean year instead of week?
i will email asking about meeting in the middle at 22k, they pay my lunch which is good. but tbh i was only spending a maximum of £5 per week on lunch cos i make it myself here at work. i went and got bread, butter, water, ham, cheese, pickle and did it myself.
you notice the difference in pocket money after a month of doing that.
im trying to be tight because im trying to save for a place to live in case my mum decides to throw me out again lol
but if 2k a year amounts to only £40 a week = £160 a month i probably would be ok with that. but add on train fare and it goes up to £260 a month then.. i would like to be putting £260 a month away into a house fund though

                    Marky and Diesel Boy

Really glad you have both been offered work and wish you both the best.
At least your both employable, unlike me unemployable, thats why i'm off to Battle in Sussex to have a look at the George Hotel, which is up for sale. If anyone knows it let me know what its like round there.
                    Thanks Philip

                        ok im sending 'em this:

Thank you for the contract. I am very much interested in this offer, and I have been investigating travel costs and take home. I am asking if you would consider meeting in the middle on the salary at £22,000. As I spoke with Roy earlier, Capital Support appeals to me a great deal, and the new role that Roy explained does, even more so.
I hope we can come to an agreement, as I am keen to start with you soon.
                        Regards
                        Tony Pearce

I would like to propose a compromise on the salary and sugest "meeting in the middle" at £22,000 PA.
