We did have a laser - but it wasn't much good in full sunlight!
The ground level was done by eye and by lining up on the top of the boards from one side to the other. It isn't dead flat, but is pretty damn close.
We are very lucky from a drainage POV as it's about 6 inches of soil onto solid chalk. This morning there were a couple of little puddles but nothing to get stressed about - and with 8" of surface going on those little level differences won't notice.
Actually for perfection we've probably made it a bit too flat - a slight slope helps with drainage. But I'm not bothered - it will be 100% better than a muddy field.
