I need to top up my brake fluid as the light flashes on when cornering because the pads are wearing (but not enough to change yet). I dont know whats in there. Is it safe to mix specs?

yes.
But I would suggest a complete fluid flush asap . When did the fluid last get replaced ? If you dont know then change it . Brake fluid absorbs water from atmosphere which will lower the boiling point of fluid . Yes, even DOT5.
Don't use silicone fluid (much higher boiling point) though, as it will just sit on top of the other fluid.

5.1 will mix with DOT3 & 4 but not 5.
Just use DOT4, unless you can't find any, then DOT3 will be fine as well.
