of course it will be legal. why wont it?
ive made side exit exhausts for loads of cars. i even did a front exit/side exhaust once. it came out the front bumper! but dont ask....
i like the idea of them being in the steps, bit unsure about the 180degree bends though but as long as the ID of the pipe at that point is large enough it should be ok. the sound will be nice and resonant if you have those side steps hollow. you can fit perforated tube inside them for a popping soundOh Nana, what's my name?

Yep, caterham's do come with a side exhaust. I think you'll find the rules say that you must not have anything protruding from your car that could be considered an increased danger to passer-bys (ie it's all about good judgement). Thus a side exhaust with heat shield should be fine, especially if it doesn't protrude out the side more that your side steps do already.

Surely there'd be way too much restriction in that design?
Far as I know with exhausts, there is no MOT requirement other than them being complete, i.e: no holes, and the sound level being within acceptable limits. Do believe one of the other regs say that exposed hot parts have to be shielded, though, to prevent accidental contact.

Originally posted by surfensteinok guy just had an idea and thought i might run it past those that know.i will be fabricating new sliders for stein.and i though i would incorporate the exhaust into them,so the idea is to make the sliders out of 50x50x4mm box section.and use the outer slider as the exhaust outlets.heres a quick sketch to show what i mean.the question is will it be legal.any thoughts.
How about something in stainless steel?Cutting steps in the roof of the world

Originally posted by surfensteinhehe yea i know.what i might do instead of fitting the exhaust to the front of the outer pipe is just fit it straight to the rear of the outer slider and partition it off.
