of course it will be legal. why wont it?
ive made side exit exhausts for loads of cars. i even did a front exit/side exhaust once. it came out the front bumper! but dont ask....

i like the idea of them being in the steps, bit unsure about the 180degree bends though but as long as the ID of the pipe at that point is large enough it should be ok. the sound will be nice and resonant if you have those side steps hollow. you can fit perforated tube inside them for a popping sound

Yep, caterham's do come with a side exhaust. I think you'll find the rules say that you must not have anything protruding from your car that could be considered an increased danger to passer-bys (ie it's all about good judgement). Thus a side exhaust with heat shield should be fine, especially if it doesn't protrude out the side more that your side steps do already.

Surely there'd be way too much restriction in that design?

Far as I know with exhausts, there is no MOT requirement other than them being complete, i.e: no holes, and the sound level being within acceptable limits. Do believe one of the other regs say that exposed hot parts have to be shielded, though, to prevent accidental contact.

Funny enough they were called Thrush side pipes, and ya can still get them.
I used to have them on a Mk1 Anglia with a v8 lump and Jag back axial. That was frightening. 1976 i think it was.

do you think i care about restriction??? the system equates to a twin 2" system with nice flowing bends.

I know this will go down like a lead brick, but that is still a bad design/philosophy. That design is just begging for problems to arise.

hehe yea i know.what i might do instead of fitting the exhaust to the front of the outer pipe is just fit it straight to the rear of the outer slider and partition it off.as in the dotted line.

If you're gonna be doing 'em, couldn'y you shorten the muffler box if it protrudes that far back towards the rear of the vehicle, to make it so that you could V it from the muffler to the rails?
