  • Engine worries update!

I posted a few requests for an engine a few days ago, no joy in finding one yet. But being a stuburn git, went down to the garage where my beast is wasting away and tried a few things. there is no air lock, but i sat there and ran it at 3000 rev's for an hour with no worries! No overheating and no pressure build up!? ummm i thought, so i took it for a quick test run. Ha! within 1/2 a mile up shot the temp!! luckly it was down hill back to the garage! Talking to some car experts in my place of work ( you meet all sorts in a casino!) they told me of a few similar stories, one about a lexus and one about an old hiace..... they suggested i change the water pump first instead of looking for an engine? is it worth a try? they recon that sometimes the pump is fine up to 3-4000 revs then when it has to work, it just cannot do the job. this would explain a few things.
I would just like a few opinions on this to see if anybody else has had similar trouble.
One more thing, if I do have to get a new engine, does anybody have any idea of a ball park figure of how much i'd be expected to pay for one??
The good news is (if there is a bright side) the garage that sold me the surf has decided to call it a day and offered me my old part exchanged frontera back, and i get to keep the surf to repair myself!! Think it may just be a little too stressful for him! So at least if i have to buy a new engine i can sell the frontera to pay for it!!

I will be back on the road surfing one day soon!!!!

    Cheers G

I'd say your definately on the right track, also have you checked that your radiator isnt blocked with debris, this could be externally like mud etc. or even internally. Have you flushed the cooling system?

      No load

Well, it sounds like a good idea to replace the cheaper parts before the expensive ones, however, it might be worth noting that the test in the garage was under no-load conditions ie the engine used a fraction of the fuel that it normally would and therefore generated less heat. It may not be as positive a result as you first think.

Also, from what I remember, it's not a good idea to operate a diesel at high revs under no-load conditions. Doesn't do 'em any good at all.

Has the cooling system been pressure checked? You have a pm.

Very similar symptons to which I had recently, standing idle or low speed driving no problems, soon as I give it some load up shot the temp gauge.
Result was partially blocked radiator from the mud from off roading, despite jet washing through the front grille after every trip. Took front grill off and realised how much hadn't been done, jet washed it off no problems at all now.
Now I am not suggesting yours is blocked from off roading mud, but other debris as suggested or even blocked internally. Worth trying out the easier things first before you spend out big money.
