  • A thought about charities / sponsorship

On this forum, we seem to be developing a bit of a policy about sponsoring charities, which by the way is an excellent idea!

Some of you might remember that early on this year, my father was quite ill and hospitalised for a while.

For those of you who dont know, he has been suffering with MS for 12 years now, and is very badly affected. He's got no use of his legs, little use of his hands, is going blind and is in pain most of the time. My mum has been his carer for a long time, but this last year she's got some help from the MS Nurses who've been brilliant with her and my dad. Nothing is too much trouble.

I've been thinking for years that I would like to show my appreciation with some sort of sponsored event, and in the past have considered cycling (I once did a sponsored cycle from North Wales to London in aid of Leukaemia sufferers) but am probably no longer fit enough. Considered a walk, which is a possibility but no 'high profile' enough. Now though, I've been struck by the thought that you guys (being the nicest bunch of people I know) might be up for some 4x4 related sponsored trip.

I know there is the risk of sponsorship saturation where people get sick of dipping in their pockets week after week, so would be happy to leave it until there is a lull in charity activity, but I would love to do something during the time I still have left with my dad around to see it (He's getting on, and MS takes no prisoners).

If anyone has any thoughts, pop your suggestions in this thread. I thought a John-O-Groats - Lands End type trip would be cool, with appropriate stickers, and hopefully run on veg oil now its cheap!

Admins, do you think this would be worthy of a sticky when the time is right?

    Suggestions welcome!

    Thanks for listening

    Hi Andy

How about we nominate a number of charitys, setup a just giving page so everyone can donate to the charity pot, then share the money equally between the ones we choose?

    MS
    Leukemia
    Macmillan Cancer
    Children in Need
    British Red Cross

And have the 'just giving' page running continuously?

That way it wouldn't matter when / what events were held I guess...

The main charities i give to without fail are the Air Ambulance which is all run on donations and the Lifeboats.
One of my supervisors at work is a lifeboat volunteer at Newlyn and in his spare time he does oil paintings of differant rescues hes been on and then does a limited amount of prints which all the proceeds he puts to the lifeboats.his pictures are fantastic.I have 2 prints and an original at a cost of £450 but well worth it

I agree, only in this country do you have to rely on volunteers to come out in all seas to rescue you, I've been on the receiveing end and those boats look fantastic as they appear over the horizon.

His pictures are so life like aswell and the lifeboat crews have certainly got guts to do what they do.
Its like yourself with the guide dog pups if it wasn't for people like yourself to give so much time to these dogs then the blind wouldn't have any kind of life on their own

Rich - does the guy have a web site or something??

If not, I'm more than happy to promote him through mine......or maybe we could convince Koi to add him on here somewhere...

he hasn't got a web site but i was talking to him a while back and he would be up to having somewhere to be able to sell online which is easy for him to add to and take pictures off when sold.Because his prints are all sold and proceeds to the lifeboats he doesn't want to pay much as its eating the profits.
Here is his original oil painting of the ill faited Soloman Brown The last lifeboat crew to die in service from Penlee.

He has an exhibition each year in a pub in newlyn and there is a gallery in Penzance that shows his work also.
His prints he sells for about £45 all framed and signed by him also

                        That man has TALENT!!

Well, once my site is up to scratch, I'm happy to let him show them there for free, and he can handle sales using Paypal I guess, which would keep the costs down....

i'll try to chat to him next week if i can and get back to you.
A couple of his paintings have made their way over to America. On one of the rescues a American pilot who asissted in the rescue came over on holiday and met Ralph and took the painting of the actual rescue home with him and it was being put in an exhibition in New York as over there there isn't anyone who just paints rescues like Ralph does
