SVO at 45p ish is still cheaper than diesel and better for the environment so a no brainer for me.

China produces 42% of the world's emmisions of Nitrogen and CO2 and refuse to commit to any global reductions, US is the next biggest polluter. UK is about 2% - 95% of that is from industry - but I still like to feel I'm doing my bit.
the exact rate is 48.35p per ltr for svo.
at the moment i pay £9.97 for 20 ltrs (i buy 140ltrs at a time). that works out at 49.85p a ltr, add the tax and it comes to 98.2p ish. deisel is at 96.9p in tescos....so in a 60 ltr tanks thats only an extra 78p a tank i'm paying to use svo.....allowing for the 10 ltrs of deisel i put in. i'd guess at an extra couple of quid maybe in total....but at least when my daughter asks me in 20yrs time, "why did you do to try and make things better...?" i can look her in the eye and tell her.

ldealistic, but no one can point the finger at me and say "you and your 4x4...." my last truck ran on lpg,...this one runs on veg....what more can you do

you know how there is a law that you cannot be tried for the same crime twice or something,
well how can we go about getting a law that you cannot be taxed for the same item twice? we have to pay either 22% or 40% on our wages, then we buy the veg oil from the shop and pay 17.5%. now they want us to pay more tax on that same thing again. thats not including employers tax, your employer has to pay tax for the privelage of paying you
      Oh Nana, what's my name?

Well come on, this is still a world dependant on oil. And so controlled by those who own the oil. If you introduce an alternative to oil, then it's a threat to their power. There are many sustainable alternatives to oil, but recive little investment or are discouraged from usage.

the thing that angers me most about the duty on veg oil, is that in order to qualify for a reduced duty rate is to engage in a rather volitile chemical reaction, and have to keep stuff like methanol at home.

they dont want you to use alternative fuel, but they complain that we're guzzling deisel. a pox on them. i like my truck smelling like a bbq along the motorway

I'd like to put my chemistry skills back into practice too, although I got a D at A-level. The problem it's a lot of hassle to set up and do. I love the smell of my exhuast now, although I've noiticed I'm stopping for donuts more often.

I've read it on the HMCR site that they were to be instructed to treat SVO & WVO under the lower duties as they matched the specification on biomass, but the HMCR are a law unto themselves and individual tax men think differantly.

Captain Chaos is right, they were supposed to be removing the liability for small users, but like any goverment agency they move at a very slow snails pace

I would use SVO but I don't see why I should pay more for it, I did my bit for the environment by getting rid of all my motors that run on full fat leaded fuel!

This environment stuff is getting on my nerves, we are now having to build houses with wind turbines on them to satisfy our council!

Actually - there was a discussion document which seemed to find in favour of including SVO in the Biodiesel classification, and they promised to look into it in 2007. They did not promise to include it. The article is Here No follow up document has yet been published. The clarification dosument they refer to doesn't really clarify anything.

Actually - this was a survey. The argument was that the cost of processing monthly returns for small home users was more than the revenue generated, thus thy suggested removing the need to declare small amount of usage. As yet they have made no decision based on the results of the survey. again it is expected in 2007.

                      I still like this bit

I'm going to be a full veggie user soon, when my fuel heater system arrives. Will be applying for the EX103 too, what does the form look like? Do you just register your details and then tell them how many litres you use? If so what's to stop me lying on the numbers?

i called this number 0845 010 9000. you need a form ex103. send this to them, and then the collections dept in b/mingham will send you return forms on a monthly basis....fill in the amounts and end 'em the cash.

what you declare is what you declare...there's no policing as far as i've seen.
i think this move to exempt small users is a way to save money and aggro as i reckon it costs a lot to admin this system. so if you monthly returns are only 10 quid or so, its far more bother really than if you're shipping 10 grands worth.

i changed my address and the hmrc didnt send me a return form for several months...i cjased up the forms and to make sure muy records were up to date, and they sent me a updated return, but only for this month.....seems the dont give a to$$ about nov, dec, jan, feb, march, april,

mine neither....i think as long as you pay them something they'll be fine. hopefully we'll be exempt soon, and we wont have to worry. declare more in the summer months as you'd probably use more as the weather's warmer.

surely you'd be walking & cycling more though as the weather's good??? After all that's what this is all about though isn't it? following the government guidelines for green transport and all that and getting a financial gain as a benefit?
