  • Urgent help on head removal needed

HELP. PLEASE.... 3.0lt Cylinder Head removal problems...

Ok, I've spent 5 hours removing the various bits of my engine, but still have to remove intake, exhaust manifolds etc etc.

1)Can some one tell me how to remove the two bolts on the back of the head that hold the pipe bracket to the head. I've got 1 inch of room and can't even see the bolt heads.
    2) How do I undo the exhaust manifold to turbo nut thats closest to the head? The other two are ok, but the nut is offset and you can't get a socket or spanner on it, also the pipe that goes from the top of the thermostat housing to round the back of the head is in the way. I can't move it out the way due to the problem above.
    3) Is it possible to remove the head along with the intake and exhaust manifolds still attatched?

    Please someone help????

just after I did ferrets head, I saw a picture where some clever swine had removed all the manifold studs, and left all the gubbins in place. the head just lifted out the middle of it all. Can't remember if it was a 3 ltr though. Looked like a damn good idea! Cant offer any detailed help cos i've only done a 2.4... good luck!
    it's in me shed, mate.

when i done my turbo i found that same nut was a pain but i used a 3/8 or 5/8 drive i cant remember which now but it had a thin extension bar to it and found that i could get that in there at a slight angle to be able to get it out.I had to use a 6point star socket(i think thats what they call them ) so it wouldn't round of the nuts and bolts
      Hope thats of some help

        OK,

        Here's an update.

Went down to the specialist tool place and bought a 10mm/8mm spanner with a swan neck hoping it would do the job. No fu**ing chance. Toyota are the ar*e wipe of designs. The bracket I'm trying to remove has a flange around the bolt head so that you can't get a spanner on it. What poxy nip designed that idea??

I have since found that the heater pipe that runs from the top of the thermostat and runs inside the nut on the turbo/exhaust manifold flange has two bolts holding it in place. So I've removed both of them, and the flange where the pipe joins the thermostat housing and managed to move it enough to get at the nut. So now all exhaust manifold nuts are loose.

Leave the exhaust and inlet manifold on the head, its much easier. lift the whole lot off together. Then you can strip the whole lot on the bench. Its no hassle.

The inner exhaust to turbo nut is the only tricky one, a socket will ift, you need to have a wobbily ended extension, and a thin walled socket to clear the water pipe near it. If you only have a normal socket, get it over the nut, than tap the extension bar and the socket will push the water pipe out the way.

Be very careful removing them, making sure the socket stays square, that last nut you need to rounding off is this one.

You don't need to touch the water pipe your having trouble with!
