  • Switch And Instrument Cluster Illumination?

How many switches are supposed to be illuminate once you've turned your lights on? The only one that lights up in my Surf is the drivers electric window switch and that's about 1 candle power! The heated rear window switch only lights up when it's on.

I've installed a couple of blue LED clusters to shine on some of the switches as they were a bugger to find in the dark.

It's the only downside I can find with the Surf, nothing that's illuminated is very bright. I've fitted the blue LED bulbs for the instument cluster which helps but it's only bright where the bulbs are located, the surrounding area is still dim.

I've seen white dials on eBay with their own lighting advertised for around £48. Has anyone fitted these, or similar, and are they much brighter than standard?

    Thanks guys.

Make sure that the speedo face that has been put on has not just been put straight over the top of the old one. Mine was dark, and i found that this was the case on my truck. I took the old one kmh one out from behind the mph one and now its bright as anything. just be careful when you take the speedo needle off, otherwise its just two small screws. Hope this helps.

Off the top of my head, I get the instrument panel, drivers window, rear window heater, rear window and cabin conditioning switches lit. If none of them are lit it's prob just a wiring snag.

Cheers lads, I originally did a search before posting and found various items regarding white dials but my initial question was going to be about the switches, I tagged on the instrument cluster as an after thought so as not to submit 2 similar postings.

I saw ian619's lighting mods ages ago and was blown away! Unfortunately I don't have the time, skills and mainly patience to attempt anything so complicated.

Thanks charvell, I will take another look at the speedo face. When I fitted the LED's I simply pulled out the old bulbs and replaced them. It never occured to me about the kph to mph conversion cover not allowing enough light through.

don't know if yours is a 2nd gen or not but on my 3rd gen all the switches light up (except the leccy window ones on passenger doors).

I am a bit picky about things like this (comes form having 2 pajeros with the same problem) and it's ususlly down to the bulbs being blown.

Replacement is dead easy as long as you aren't scared of taking the switch apart 9it's dead easy0 and the bulb is available from maplins, code Bt43, cost £1.75 for 10

              hope this helps

All switches except passenger windows, & mirror switch have lights it (2nd gen) although their so dim they might not as well have bothered, there a mix of small grain of wheat bulbs and leds, some are quite easy to replace and some are sods,

Cheers lads! Now I know they're supposed to be lit up I'll make a start on splitting a few switches (once it gets a bit warmer of course, at the moment it's emergency repairs only!)
