This is the important point here, and something that did happen up until we explicitly opened our doors to eastern europe. Look at the older immigrant populations such as the Chinese and Indian communities? Both contribute to British society, and both have integrated seamlessly. This is the way immigration needs to work if it is not to cause the ill-feeling that abounds currently.

And Sancho, Britain does have borders that separate it's constituent parts. It's just that Wales needs razor wire and border patrols

Well, I was going to mention that England, as opposed to Britain, has borders and I am all for keeping those Scottish and Welsh out. Despite my somewhat celtic heritage.......

The thing is, the Chinese got here a very long time ago, followed by the Indians. West Indians, who mostly got here in the 50s and 60s, are now largely integrated along with the Bangladeshis from the 70s and 80s. Somalis and Albanians from the 90s will be next, then the Kosovans. In 20 years time, all the Poles that people are concerned about will be part of society too. My point being that, historically, immigrants have been loathed and, over time, have proved to integrate perfectly well. It takes time, that's all.

Apart from the annoyance that some expect the benefits of living in this country whilst acting as if they still abide by the rules of their own country of origin, you have to think of one simple fact. The English are descended, and have been invaded and colonised by, most of the major countries at some point. We're all a bunch of immigrants to a degree.

the problem now though is attitude. Back in the fifties and sixties when people were encouraged to come here standards and the fact that Britain had a culture of decency and to get on you put effort in. Now though it is a culture of wanting everything straight away and benefits. If the benefit system was changed so that you get out what you put in so to speak and nothing just for turning up then the situation would change.

Have a read of this, why can't we have a strong goverment like this:

                            THIS JUST IN FROM SYDNEY.

"Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on
Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals
in a bid to head off potential terror attacks. A day after a group of
mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to Australia at a special
meeting with Prime Minister John Howard, he and his ministers made it
clear that extremists would face a crackdown. Treasurer Peter Costello
hinted that some radical clerics could be asked to leave the country if
they did not accept that Australia was a secular state and its laws were
made by parliament. "If those are not your values, if you want a country
which has Sharia law or a theocratic state, then Australia is not for
you," he said on national television. "I'd be saying to clerics who are
teaching that there are two laws governing people in Australia, one the
Australian law and another, the Islamic law, that this is false. If you
can't agree with parliamentary law, independent courts, democracy, and
would prefer Sharia law, and have the opportunity to go to another
country which practices it, perhaps, then, that's a better option,"
                            Costello said.
Asked whether he meant radical clerics would be forced to leave, he
said those with dual citizenship could possibly be asked to move to the
other country. Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters
that Muslims who did not want to accept local values should "clear off."
Basically, people who don't want to be Australians, and they don't want
to live by Australian values and understand them, well then they can
basically "clear off," he said. Separately, Howard angered some
Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spies monitoring
                            the nation's mosques.
BRITS, AMERICANS and CANADIANS.....ARE YOU LISTENING!!
This is Leadership with guts! The way it is. The way it should be.
Our men and women died in two world wars to get us this country and we
                            are giving it away.

                            FORWARD THIS TO . . . E V E R Y O N E !!"

Believe me, Australian politics is a joke. Very very corrupt and full of bull$hit. John Howard and his boys turn up on the telly and say something that they think sounds good every single day without fail.

It's just popularist rhetoric and none of it ever actually happens. They just say what people want to hear. You will note that there is no actual policy mentioned here, just a load of 'what I reckon is'.......

If you think Blair spouts a load of b0llocks do indeed pay more attention to Australian politics, it's worth it for the laugh.
