Do you mean a steel lintel?

I put a 8" X 5.5" X 5 metre one up on my own, just gradually lift one end up at a time on ever increasing piles of blocks until you get it up to the required height. How high do you need to lift yours?

You should use a couple of chain hoists if you've got a couple of fixing points and some slings. A couple of frottoes would be perfect if you could get hold of them, or maybe a big floor crane.

If it's just a Catnic you should be able to lift it between two of you, but I didn't tell you to do that.....

You can get them in bottles too!

just rub the sides and they pop out in a puff of pink smoke, then you tell them to put the steel up and it's done in a blink of an eye.

could you not wangle it up the stairs??

or stand it upright and secure the top end, then using a pulley arrangment, lift / swing the bottom end up.
                            Everyone thinks I'm paranoid!!

Sounds like the ideal time to justify buying a winch for the Surf, then using a block and tackle you could winch it up.
