You'll need a wireless modem/router, with a suitable connection (by that, I mean it depends if you're on cable or a BT line).

Assuming the laptop has wireless capability, that's all you need...

If there's no wireless on it, then you'll also need a PCMCIA wireless adaptor as well..

I bought my router last year on ebay, for about £20. My PCMCIA adaptor was about £35, I think..
      It just does, OK?

Cheers Dave, we're on a BT line using Tiscali broadband, so things are looking easier.

I got a company BT broadband with a Netgear router box thing . It says I can add a wireless thingy to it , but I can not find the Netgear one anywhere . Can I use a different make to Netgear ? Then I can go wireless for home aswell .

                      Yes.

It's one thing that manufacturers seem to have accepted as standards.

My router is Ovislink, my Wireless card is Belkin, and they work fine..

doh. ignore me! i thought it was a d610 and not a c610. im off to bed.

these guys stock a nice an cheap dlink card at the bottom for it

and they also have new batteries too you'll probably find that the current battery isnt all that if its second hand.

as for combinations, generally speaking most wireless cards will work with most wireless routers. remember that you'll need both. i can link up to some recommendations if you like...

                            Hi Vince

I use tiscali via BT too - I have a Netgear Router, and use a Belkin Wireless Access Point - connected to the non-wireless Router to allow me to use wireless anywhere in the house.

If you get hold of a router, you can either get the wireless or wired one, depends on how your house is laid out, and where you want to use the laptop most - you will need to locate it close enough to the phone line (as I'm sure you will already know, sorry). You can also get routers with built in switches - ports along the back to connect stuff to. I have my printer connected to mine and I share it over the network for my other PCs.

Let me know what you get and I'll be happy to help you get it all set up.

do you have ADSL (via phoneline) or cable (like NTL, Telewest etc)?

you need to get the right type of wireless router for a start. if you have adsl then I would recommend something like this:

                              http://www.cclonline.com/product-inf...ufacturer_id=0

comes with firewall (aka NAT) and modem inbuilt. good reliable make too.

if cable then the alternative model is

                              http://www.cclonline.com/product-inf...ufacturer_id=0

these dont need the modem part, as you will be using your cable providers modem.

once you have the 'base station' sorted, you'll need wireless cards for the connecting machines.

one of these will do for a laptop

                              http://www.cclonline.com/product-inf...ufacturer_id=0

and one of these will do for a pc

                              http://www.cclonline.com/product-inf...ufacturer_id=0

essentially, you need to make sure you get the correct type (adsl or cable) and then look for the right features (modem/firewall/wep/etc).

                              was that of more use?
