I know i paid over the top on my 2nd gen 3l but seeing as mother inlaw lent me the money i never had a choice to get one elsewhere apart from the garage i got it from
Good luck with your search and if you get this one
        Hi again,

I dont think I will be bothering with this Surf M8 - The mis-matched Pics have put me off straight away (thanx to the forum members for pointing them out).

As for how quick i want a surf, well as I am carless at the moment I need it asap but, having said that I am not going to rush out and buy the first one I like. Thanks to the wisdom of the kind folk of this forum - I get advice first

I guess I want what we all want - a Surf that is a good car (not a bad import), in as tip top condition as possible, at the best possible price, with the best possible spec and kit level with all the extras. Min 6 months warrenty.

But the one thing I have been advised more than anything else is to pay only by credit card because if it all goes wrong you get some legal protection on a credit card purchase. I have had this advice from a Solicitor at the Citizens Advice Bureau, a Nottinghamshire Trading Standards officer and an advisor at my bank. Paying anything over £1000 cash for a car would be damn stupid and as for Pay Pal - forget it, you have no legal backing what so ever.

If buying Jap imports is the growing market that some car mags claim it is then the dealers have gotta wise up and compete for business. It is indeed a buyers market but most dealers seem to be too greedy and ask silly money. They forget that the whole point of buying a Jap import is that you get a great car of higher spec than the UK model at a fraction of the cost (or so the rumour goes - lol)

I think Im gonna go back to "Shank's Pony" or my very very old trusty (or is that rusty) pushbike.

I'd LOVE a black Surf but they are even harder to find than a honest car dealer

Look at the colour of the wing mirror in the dash pic.....its green

edit, and the bonnet for that matter.

another edit. they must just be using existing pics they already had, many dealers do this. If you're interested in the description, just arrange a viewing, you've got nothing to loose. And if you haven't been to see a 3rd gen at all yet, it would at least be a vehicle to compare others against.

              Kenny,

If you're in the hunt for a Surf and have decent money, it's worth getting in touch with Bob 'Hilux' and Paul "MrSurf" on the forum as both have good surfs at reasonable prices.

Paul gets the p1ss taken for historical reasons but is well respected for selling selling good vehicles. Bob is well known and well respected too. You'd be better of buying through a forum member or asking one of these two than trying to find something from a 'proper' dealer.

                Hi Sancho,

Have just fired off an e-mail to Bob 'Hilux' and Paul "MrSurf. Thanks for the suggestion and interested to see the results.

                Thanks,

                Kenny

                  Kenny,

Not sure you'll get a dealer to accept a credit card purchase for a 2nd hand motor, as their bank charges for the value you are looking at will be too big for them to accept against their margin. We tried this when buying my wife's Corsa earlier this year (£4750) and were told no way would they accept a CC, it had to be a cleared cheque for that amount.

Best of luck in trying to find one but I doubt you'll get a good deal if you can find a dealer to accept that form of payment.
                  Mike G

i paid 8k for my 1995 ssr-x with just over 10k on the clock when it came into the uk. its brand new all over , you'd think it rolled off toyotas production line. maybe i did pay over the odds , but in years to come the extra i paid now will reflect in what i dont have to spend later. touch wood.

i admire mr.surf - he tells it like it is.

                                i heard on average it costs between 1 to 1.5 k to import a vehicle . MR.SURF .

is this figure about right ??? i personnally wont touch a surf thats been in the uk for years , it would be a fresh import everytime , pure quality. especially if you have a scout over in japan looking at them for you in the auctions.
