The best place for the aeriel is bang in the middle of the roof.

Best and feasible are two totally separate things. If you went
for a roof mount, only a fairly short antenna would be feasible,
thereby any gain from the improved placement would be negated.

As with most things, you get what you pay for and if you want to be able to transmit more than a mile or two then its all down to the antenna and the ammount of power you put through it.

Do some research and ask for advice of people who aleady have them, most of the standard antenna's probably arn't much use.

That's probably a misnomer, to a large degree. In most cases,
the above would be true. With CB aerials, spending more doesn't
necessarily equate to a price to performance ratio. The more
expensive aerials may offer very little, if any, benefit over a
standard unit, and conversely, could even be less suited for the
application. Take, for example, formers on a fibreglass core. Less
resilience to impact.
