  • A bit a Fun...

    Last night my daughter asked me what a particular slang word meant that she had heard at school [no not that]. It was a piece of local slang [well Stoke-on-Trent, about 15 miles south of here] that I'd not heard in a while.

    So, I though I'd post a few of them here, see if you could guess what they meant:

    Bortered
    Puthery
    Bost'ted
    Clempt
    Borsant

    No cheating by searching the web etc.

    Cheers,

    Shab.

            Think i only got it cos we share some coloquialisms here in cheshire.

            We also have :

            Thrutching
            yosking
            yorping (edited, as spelt this wrong before!)
            chunnering
            slatting

            some of those may not be cheshire-isms though.

            my great grandad could talk cheshire, amazing really, cos no-one does nowadays, this county's full of yuppies and footballers now!

                thrutching = bonking/givin it a bit of welly?
                yosking = coughing?
                chunnering = talking/going on a bit?

                don't know the rest...

                  2 out of three, not bad.

                  Thrutching = fidgiting, or wringling in your seat.

                  I was not the one who gave the name Mongleton Massive, it was in fact one of my mates from Mongleton!

                  someone must get the others, i use them every day!! maybe thats why i get so many funny looks!

                      i guess it may have been harder had you not been from cheshire yourself.

                      i'm sorely tempted to call my dad for some more, just tryin to kill time before 3pm when the pub opens!!

                          Heree are some Bedfordshire words:

                          Hommocks
                          Hommocking
                          Dobbing ( or to Dob)
                          Hen'us
                          Wash'us
                          Cawt
                          Frit
                          Glyning (maybe Glining)

                          I wish I could remember some more. They are from my grandparents era. Don't hear them much these days.
