Yeah, I like to keep her clean. Lets see a picture of yours UD? Bet it has some nice mud packs in there!!!!

I need to get my aircon done, as the guy who did it fu**ed it and now haven't got any gas in it.

Toyota do it for £89. I might go to them, I can get it serviced at the same time.

Using fresh R134a with old will lead to the fresh stuff depleting very quickly. In my humble opinion it's a false economy, however I'm sure some would disagree. I spend £80 odd every 3 years to have a full aircon service, from what I've heard in the past you need at least one of these cannisters per year! You do the math!

R12 is now a banned substance, as apparently it changes to mustard gas under extreme heat!!!! If you're pre-94 and still got an R12 system get a retro kit fitted and get over to R134a, if this month is anything to go by, you're gonna need the aircon this year!!!!

R12 was banned because it is an ozone depleter--however
there are drop in gasses to replace it sf 56 is one of them
not likly to get from a garage.see a good aircon firm.

I bought one of these for my 2.4 but the nozzle won't fit the low pressure port on the A/C unit......another waste of money, or am i just doing it wrong?

Yeah, what is a retro kit? Is it something to do with what i posted earlier on in the thread (links to article about R12 and R134a not being compatible as exchangalbe as R134a can cause issues with R12 components) or is it something else? How much and where from?

I just had a lengthy conversation with an A/C specialist from Leeds.
Apparently pre 1993 Surfs running the old R12 gas need the system flushing by a gas disposal specialist as it is now a banned gas. The ports and pipes then need to be replaced and the system re-charged with the new type gas.
He quoted me £200-£300 for the lot doing so i'm just going to have to sweat....till i get Marky's old Surf if he ever gets his new one.!!!!!

That's the conclusion I was coming too as well, just had what I had found on the net to go by, posted it here to try and get confirmation.

I'd imagine that your Surf is still running the old gas, if the nozzle doesn't fit.

I got mine swapped over to the new gas last year, and part of that job was to replace the nozzles...
                          It just does, OK?

I was questioning a local Air-Con recently and when I said the model, they said they would need to have a look first as the fitments for the air-con on the older style are smaller apparently and hence cant use the current R134a fitments.

Will need to see as I have a sticker on the surf saying R134a but never bothered about it until this warm spell as I still get a slight cold spot if the heater is on full cold and AC on

I'm going to have to get mine done ('91) as the heat is killing me! I don't see any sticker, it's never worked, and there doesn't appear to be any gas in the cylinder either. Hmmm.. thinking about it Tony put a new belt on and the electrics seem to be OK so it must be out of gas....

But I guess it'll need r13a or whatever it is so a conversion sounds like its next.

anyone know of a good specialist london / south of london?
I got me a new Surf baby yeah!
