They also do a larger can with a gauge built in - this is the one that's £40

I have asked our refrigeration guys here at work what efect it would have if you mixed gases and they were totally unsure - basically they don't do it, because they don't need too, therefore they don't know. I am researching mixing gases at the moment and so far i have found this:

After retrofit the system is marked so that in future there were used the same refrigerants and oils for servicing. It is necessary to do to avoid mixing of different refrigerants in future. Such blends can have unpredictable thermodynamic characteristics, which will lead to decreasing of cold-productivity and dropping of efficiency of the system operation.
              From Link 1

              And this:

Don't mix R-12 and R-134a since contaminated refrigerant must be sent off-site for reclamation
              from Link 2

By implication these seem to be saying it is ok, but it will be more hassle in the future (altho if the system is R-12 already you have to get the gas reclaimed ANYWAY) and it might negatively affect the systems performance but noone can say...

              I'll keep looking....

                hmmm

                NOTE:
HFC-134a still carries some concern about compatible lubricants. Lubricants typically used with CFC-12 do not mix with HFC-134a. Polyalkylene glycols (PAGs) mix properly with 134a at low temperatures but have upper-temperature problems, as well as incompatibility with aluminum bearings and polyester hermetic motor insulation. Ester-based synthetic, (POE), lubricants for HFC-134a resolve these problems but are incompatible with existing PAG or mineral oils.
                from http://www.epatest.com/manual609.html

How this affects us R-12 people i don't know!

Can anyone tell us what refrigerant is in the cannister? It might be some kind of generic one that can be used wth both systems, such as duracool or enviro-safe (ones i have found on the net)

Here is a picture of where the caps are for the valves to the high and low pressure points for the aircon. Hope this helps.
