I think there is a bit of a misconception regarding smells here, running on new veg oil, i.e straight from Tescos etc. does not smell like a chippy, it's an bl***y rancid (horrible) smell.
Running on WVO, (oil that has previously been used for frying,) gives the exhaust a 'chippy' smell.

wont this just affect new cars that have an official figure for emmissions? cant see how they would check every cars emmisions to work ot how much tax to charge.. anyway veggie users dont have any co2 contribution to the enviroment so does that make em tax free?
      it's in me shed, mate.

Read something in the Mail today which suggested that this will only affect new vehicles as there is no way that they can go back and check all existing vehicles for this level of CO2 emmisions. So we should be OK with the Surf's but those buying new Jags, RR's, X5's, LC's, D3's etc etc should feel the heat.

Why don't they just ban parents from dropping off little Johnny or Jane within 1 mile of an urban school anyway. Most of them probably live within that distance. I find it a real bugger every morning when trying to cycle past the local incomprehensive with cars coming past and just pulling straight in to drop off the ignorant little sods, without bothering to check where I am.

my 2 pennith'worth on the Mail

I use my 4x4 in 3 ways: Daily commute, off-roading and pulling a horse trailer and hence do not need 3 separate vehicles to do the task required. The vehicle was produced in 1995 and still meets all MOT regulations and in doing so means that I am not contributing to the use of extra materials or power needed to make newer models.

I have also looked into the use of SVO [Straight Vegetable Oil] to run in conjunction with the diesel but once again this government through the Customs & Excise have decided to put a heavy duty on it which means that running on Biodiesel [or Substitute Fuel as they like to call it] is more expensive to use in some areas but yet the government want us to go green, so does this mean that the government are liars in respect to wanting people to be green!

On a final note, how many more vehicles on the road will be unsafe when towing due to the increase in revenue.

PS Is this revenue going to be used on the roads!...I very much doubt it!

I seems that we'll be paying more in the future, and whatever way that increased costs are introduced somebody is going to be 'discriminated' against. High fuel costs seem to be the 'fairest' way to encourage people to buy or drive more fuel efficient vehicles. However, high fuel costs can be a problem for industry and the economy.

Who is worse; a parent dropping off kids at school (when they might have walked) in a 4x4, or somebody that drives to work for an hour in a small car (when they could have chosen to live closer to work or use the train; not always possible).

The issue is annual mileage... if you do few miles per year it makes little difference what you drive.

                Something fishy !!

I have just tried many times to add my comments, and have not been able to do so. I am being told that there have been 50 comments ??????? Perhaps they've capped the response limit to 50 - frightened of the truth maybe !!

Or maybe it's just my PC !

                I'll try again later.

                  Hello Gaz,

My sentiments exactly, I use my truck in very much the same way as your good self and I'm not rich, or even vaguely wealthy. The additional incentive to owning a truck for me, is that for anything between 5 to 15 days per year, I wouldn't even be able to get out of my own drive without a 4 x 4. What do these prats want us country dwellers to do - all move to the towns cities. Aren't these caotic enough as it is ????

This tax should be post code dependent, let your X5 and Porche Cayenne owners do their bit.

                    OK Here's a rant...........
Just goes to show what a bunch of short-sighted idiot city-dwellers they are. This government sees the countryside as a giant park for the use of townies. It does not concede that people actually work or live there.
Of course 4x4s on the Chelsea school run are stupid, but these people are the wives of city-somethings who have the Cayenne/RR Sport/Lexus for the trip to Gloucester for the weekend house. The extra tax on a new 4x4 won't even register. The Government simply don't get the fact that some people actually USE a 4x4 for their work or because the roads around the villages they live in are never gritted and are falling apart.
As a self-employed young man with a young family, a mortgage, the need of a 4x4 for work it is HELL living here!!!!!!!!!!!
Show me the 'new business start up incentives' (you try starting a new business in 2005). Show me the help that's on offer to really go green in your life (have you asked about any government help to do this? You need the salary to support a second home and a Porsche Cayenne to save money and go green!) Why is Biodiesel virtually the same price as fossil fuel if its sustainable and better for the enviro? Why are the roads so bad if we pay so much tax? If they want us off the road why are train journeys so expensive and so crowded and so unreliable? And why did we go to war for fuel? We should grow our fuel. Our country would be greener. The countryside would have a purpose again. More people would work locally if agriculture was revived and we would have had to support the Yanks in a war no-one wanted.

White, young, middle-classed, married with kids, mortgaged, country-dweller=the new ethnic minority with no government interest..................

                    I am very disillusioned.

As usual, the voice of the extreme right - the Mail, oversimplifies things in order to stir up the anti brigade.

I wonder if these asses realise that when on veggie, I contribute less to pollution than Mrs 'paint my own Doc Martins and owns 32 cats cos "I'm wacky me" $$$$$$ tree hugger' in her bunny saving Prius does?

I wonder if the same anti-camp respondents realise how the government is taxing such green fuels as veg oil to the hilt, simply so they dont miss out on a big potential cash cow?

I'd like to see them tell that side of the story, but that wouldn't stir up the unwashed masses half as much would it?

Don't know who makes my blood boil more. The Daily Mail or Brown!

In addition to the Surf, I have a little Citroën - a sort of modern-day 2CV with a little 70hp diesel engine - and nobody has ever claimed it isn't green.

It churns out CO2 at the whopping rate of 181 g/km, putting it just below the top of Band "D".

I would be interested to figure out exactly what the Surf throws out. Certainly it doesn't smoke like a Mondeo TD.

At the end of the day people, it's up to US to do something about it. So next time we can vote, lets vote Labour OUT. If you do vote for them, then you have only yourselves to blame.....

I agree. I have never felt so politically motivated before. This government has quietly and sneakily taken an awful lot away from us. They are full of sound-bites and no real substance. I know this can be said of many previous, but this lot have lost their way from the 'good-honest-working man's labour' I remember being brought up on. I am afraid it's all gone down the pan and it will take some getting back. If at all.
Getting back to proper things like cars - I thought it truly awful that the new VED band A for cars that are the greenest is just spin - as no manufacturer offers a car for sale in the UK market that complies...................... .
