I know some of you do not like caravanners, but a lot of caravanners use 4 x 4s to two their twin axle or even large single axle caravans. They can do this safely by using 4 x 4s, however if they are forced into buying an underpowered vehicles to tow these large caravans they will becomne a danger on the roads.
In effect the government is promoting unsafe driving in its effort to curb the chelsea tractor. A lot of 4 x 4s today have lower emmissions than an 6 year old Modeo as an example.
Secondly if people stop buying these large caravans, the caravan industry will be hit hard and force redundancies. The knock on effect is that many sites will also suffer and in turn this may have a knock on effect on local industry as there will be fewer tourists to sell their goods to.
Very short sighted of the government!

I'm sure they will take a lot of notice of Daily Mail readers! I don't want to spend more than anyone else but it does seem fairest to make the tax on emissions rather than just 4x4s, mind you it would have made an interesting list of what was in and what was out wouldn't it? At least we will be in good company with all the rest of the gas guzzlers! I think we should count ourselves lucky they haven't banned them like the government do everything else they dont like. Cough up and enjoy the driving while you can before they ban them outright.
Parts of your engine go up, stop then go back! Mm!

anyway, if the government provided school buses, or heaven forbid schools you could walk to, no one would need to take their kids to school in a 4x4. to$$ers..
                  it's in me shed, mate.

I added my comments- see below- it's mainly a gripe about the media saying that this is an anti 4x4 tax when actually it isn't.

Did anybody actually READ what the chancellor is saying? He mentions NOTHING ABOUT 4x4'S!! The new raise in Road Tax covers ALL cars emmitting MORE THAN 250g/CO2/Km! Please read it properly.

I think you will find that this covers many more cars than just 4x4's (in fact many 4x4's won't have be covered since they are more ecconomical than this!!!). Basically it will be a tax on ALL larger engined cars the poor motorist being the easy target yet again.

The media have got it totaly wrong (as usual) saying it's anti 4x4 tax! If your car has an engine bigger than 2.5L then YOU might well be affected- whether all four wheels are driven or only two.....

Too true, it's not just 4x4s this tax would affect, however - this is an issue that affects all of us and so we should be saying something about it (as I have done).
At the same time we should also be pointing out how little is done to promote the use of Bio Diesel. May be we can start our own campain???

                        posted my comment...
' I think that the government is missing the point here a little, by applying an uneconomical vehicle tax hike to 4x4's.
Their are number of assumptions being made here!
What about the Fiat Panda 4x4, as an extreme of a vehicle that would be catched in a 4x4 tax, along with other 4x4 saloons, also what about large engine sports & luxury cars that are uneconomical, these would be avoided. 4x4 means 4 wheel drive, I appreciate some are uneconomical and the current culture to own a vehicle of this nature as a status, but what the government is talking about will not address those issues and instead masks them with another.
The only true way to guarantee to hit uneconomical cars with higher tax is to put the tax on the fuel, and we all know how emotional that is, so we hit another minority.
                        When will we learn?
What about when minority means YOU.
Come on people we are much more intelligent than this.'

Wher oh where is the logic?

Do you know what the Surf CO2 specks are? Would be interesting to know, because what happens if you take a truck for an MOT and the readings are much lower than this limit. Would we be able to submit this to the goverment and get a refund???

I suspect the Mail got more 4x4 suporters than expected! Hopefully they also realised the massive goof they made by saying it was an anti 4x4 tax!!!

Just make sure you have loads of veg oil in your tank when it's MOT time, get your new ticket then use regular diesel the rest of the time.

                                No worries there Vince.

Haven't you ever had the MOT guy question why it smells like a chippy though?
