hey Gav I see you have upgraded your shiny scaffold tube snorkel to a hoover powered one?!?
i guess cos its a bigger diameter, does it go better now?
well Tim after the turbo sucked itself to death at Brick kiln thought i needed to sort out the restriction prob. £25 for 2m of 65mm flex exhaust seemed to good to pass so we went Dyson on it!
works a treat though with the scaffold tube now replacing the one standard box left on the exhaust and straight pipe through to a fazer ART race can!!!!

same might work on your new toy?
(sorry logged on as wife)
yeah im going to hoover pipe that too when I get it running right.
I might put back on the proper exhaust until its set up... its got about 2ft of pipe into an R6 original silencer dangling underneath which sounds meaty. when I get some bigger pipe run under it I will tuck the can up under the back end now the tow bar is off (these dont have petrol tanks in the way like the SJ's do!)
so you have no middle box on the Surf now? how does it go/sound?
well cleaner, still could take a few more hours to get spotless but the drains are blocked already so will leave it at that. Kept the turbo for laughs would make a good ash tray!lol!
oil leak should be classed as "general" even after the clean ran out of things to point at!!
oh and that weird bolt that held the RAD on was very strong, had the front end hanging of it.(the gap at the mounts is now flush)
will keep you posted as to progress should hit it again after wed(end of course in work) so more pics then.
Gav
so do we get to know the full extent of the plans then?!
Ok, ok, I was going to V8 it, but the cost and the amount of wading I do puts me off. I'm aiming to do the bustard run in mid winter (about 2.5 to 3 ft deep), so she'll be staying 2.4 diesel powered but.....who knows I need more convincing that V8's are the way to go.
So far I'm going to try and do the following..........
2.5 inch body lift,
4 or 5 inch suspension lift,
35 inch BFG Mud terrains,
Full external cage,
Winch bumper on the front
Winch (maybe trying to justify cost vs useage)
Heavy duty rear bumper
Snorkel
Manual Hubs
Buckets and harnesses
Re geared diffs
Possibles........
Coil over shock front axle ( or leafs if its tooo much grief ),
Move radiator to rear of vehicle ( fed up with overheating )
Repaint
But for now, just get the bugga running would be nice!
Unfortunately it won't be ready till at least the autumn just as the puddles start to fill up.
Well as it stands LTP will need new TURBO (again) rebuilt vacum pump(again) replacing the front crank shaft oil seal. New steering idler and various ball joints, poss new front bearings And thats before looking at the fact the shims on the head will need doing before long.
Still at least it's stopped snowing and I can feel my fingers again!!!
Just wondering tho. It would seem that its a common problem to munch vac pump vanes when serious offroading. Thats twice now in a year. Anyone else had this prob?
ie complete lack of brakes after deep mud, or is it just me and Gav?
well when I said vac pump blades I should maybe have waited till the full extent of the problem arose, that being the main bearing in the pump having more play than the 'old vic' and every seal being blown aswell. never mind though Dan got a lovely diagram from a very dopey man at toyota and can rebuild it when you give me the nod. just spent an hour in the kitchen sink with fairy getting it all clean.
Think it might just be the destructive nature of our driving styles though cos my local toyota man has never heard of them going wrong and wants £650+vat for the whole unit(excluding the alternator).

Each time we go deep wading in thick stuff the braking on ours gets very suspect so it goes in to the garage opposite Lotties office and they clean them out and adjust them I think they just fill up with mud and crud rather then do in an vanes though...

I take it you are having the external cage custom made then? You're not going to chop the back either (bob tail it or something extreme)? Then you can put roll bars on and mount the radiator at the rear at this angle with a fan /
