Seriously, you'd break one or the other, can't imagine what would break both, and whats broken in the diff? ring gear/pinion or spider gears?

If you need parts, I have used rear shafts, and a couple of whole 3rd members if you know what gears you have. Gonna be a lot cheaper than new parts.

Also, seeing as Jedi already changed one shaft, in itself a rarity, get the axle housing checked out, it could bent from damage in the past

it wasn't the right hand side half shaft like the aa man said, it was left hand side half shaft & rear diff. as you can imagine i'm over the moon after owning it for 1 week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sad to hear of your woes, it sounds like rotten luck.
Try not to blame the person you bought it from, it just happens, sometimes you are the windshield sometimes you are the bug. Ultimately it is still a big complex and old car, bits go wrong, allways have done and always will.
I should Imagine that the previous owner feels terrible that anything has gone wrong with it.

you still driving the truck around? i was under the impression that the rear axel was of the "semi floating" design (axel shaft take vehicle weight as well as providing power) and that depending on where abouts the shaft breaks the wheel and brake drum can work their way outboard, ie fall off!
i stand to be corrected if this isn't the case, just my understanding of the design.

The wheel wont fall off. If the half shaft is snapped in half it wont make any difference. The centre nut holds all the hub and wheel on. All you have to do is undo the flange bolts and pull it out. The hub will stay on. Thats if the design is the same as my Defender, which it should be as the axles are of the same type. The only problem you have is if the front shafts go. I snapped a front shaft on my Defender driving it while braking at the same time to bed the new brake discs, pads and calipers in after I re-built the axles with all new parts. You have to strip the whole lot off on a Defender, as it's permanent 4wd and the CV joint is an integral part of the drive shaft, which sits behind the hub. But a Surf is different as it's not a live axle.

The rear shaft will just pull out when you undo the flange bolts. It usually goes in one of two places. Either the flange end or the Diff end. If it's the diff end you might have to take the diff casing cover off as the half shaft end will probably be stuck in the diff, should come out ok. If it's the flange end, no worries. Will be an easy fix. I would bite the bullet and buy a genuine parts half shaft. Patern parts might be a bit cheaper, but trust me through experience, they are definitely not the same quality. You get what you pay for on something like that.

I know it wont make you feel better mate, but I owned a Ford Cortina years ago. This guy bought it off me for £500. It had no TAX or MOT. The guy was a chippy from a site my dad was working on. He came up and gave my old man the reddies, as I was away. He DROVE it back to where he lived. He went to the garage and filled it with petrol as it had been empty for months. As he was driving down the motorway, the fuel tank fell off because of the rust. Poor sod pulls over onto the hard shoulder and waits for a wrecker. While he was waiting, the old bill turned up. They soon found out it wasn't Taxed or MOT'd, and nicked him for it. Now that's having a bad day!!

Also a mate of mine sold a bloke his Lightweight Land Rover that he owned for about 8yrs with no problems. The guy drove it home and the engine blew up.............. These things do happen, just a pain in the a*** when they happen to you. I've only had my truck about 3wks, and it needs a new radiator, as the top by the filler cap has a hair line crack in it.

you have to disconnect the brake line and handbrake cable, then just 4 nuts on the back of the drum to undo, then pull the whole halfshaft out, wheel and all if you like!

i can't understand how the wheel is securely held by 6 big nuts, yet the entire assembly is held in by 4 small nuts!... they must go through some pounding!

Its not fully floating axle, the bearing locates the axle as well as supporting it, you need to remove the whole thing to swap a shaft. The other down side is no back plate on the diff housing. If you have to remove the diff to get to other end of the broken shaft.

well toyota have refused to repair the damage that has happened again, due to the lift kit that jedi fitted himself. so i'm now looking for a rear axle if anyone can help? would it be a good idea for me to get a garage to check the lift kit has been fitted properly? gutted & i just want it back on the road

Thats rubbish, a mild lift won't affect the rear axle, what a cop out.

If you want to change the whole axle out you need to find out what gears you have so they match the front.
You still haven't posted whats actually broken in the diff? I said before, I have whole diffs shafts and a whole axles, but the gearing needs to be the same.

the hilux is back outside my house now, just had it picked up from toyota, now hunting & waiting for a rear axle. here's the last laugh, the tow truck i sent came back with a gleaming white hilux pick up that toyota gave him & not my truck how stupid can they be, they even give him the keys for it idiots
