but i guess if you have 4wd button depressed (that's 4wd, centre diff open) then you could spin a front wheel on the road???

what is the dash display saying?? should be all lights off...

green "wheels" should be lit for 4wd (diff open)
orange circle would be lit when diff is locked (either 4H or 4L)
thats the thing all the lights are off 4wd works fine when switch is pushed it,s just the front wheels drive in 2wd very strange

If you floor it from standing (2wd mode) on tarmac you should get an indication as the road is ripped up from the rear and 2 black lines are left!!!

What the hell is the difference between AWD and 4WD ?? The only way there would be a difference is if you had a 6 wheeler

            I think....

AWD = all wheel drive - like on my subaru, its always sending power to 4 wheels, with centre viscous differential to accomodate wheel rotation speeds, and distributed power between front/rear axles if need be.

4WD = four wheel drive - with a centre differential locked. As in a 2nd gen 4runner/surf, or 3rd gen with the diff locked.

A 3rd gen in 4wd mode without diff-locked, maybe different to AWD, as the centre diff is open, and not a limited slip diff type like a subaru

            my tuppene worth anyway..

Its the way of making the distinction between 4wd systems, AWD (all wheel drive) is usually refered to for road cars with '4wd' and always have a center diff, but an open center diff offroad leaves you no better than 2wd as the center diff will slip and give power to front or rear axle only. Then you have to lock the center diff, giving you 4wd the same as a 2nd gen Surf in 4wd.
