Camping stuff no problem. Auto box, thats a problem. Maybe I am not ready for this trip yet as I dont even know why a manual is worse than an auto for off road

Normal lanes, with no rock crawls, bomb holes and steep drops down narrow gulleys that are at 30 degree angles, you'll be fine - if however you want to do all of those, you will get leg ache...ask Plumb Bob...wherever he is...

Thats just jealousy mate. Manuals the only way to go and much better off road in my opinion.

              Ha, ha, ............ha

              Will this debate never end?

They both have their pluses and minuses.

              It boils down to this...........

If you drive an auto, then they are the best and if you drive a manual........................

              Get the idea?

By the way, after the last big run around Wales, a manual driver did say he felt like Michael Flately.

Yep, I was that manual driver, and due to some rocky sections in river, I can now say I am proficient at riverdance.

Give me an auto anytime for rocks and stuff, A lot less hassle, and just as capable as a manual.

                Just my two penneth.

I find the engine breaking much more capable on a manual, only by observation though as I've never driven an auto surf , maybe yoshie or kerrsurf will let me have a go next time.

When it comes to the rocks/ riverbeds at Drumclog, i find that 4 wheel low
1st gear is the perfect speed without having to use the clutch at all. but thats obviously down to the speed over that terrain and isint a formula.

I however get a bit annoyed when i have to change up when trying to climb a muddy hills.

BTW - i sometimes use the idle up selector when offroad in 4 low in order to keep a bit of momentum when idiling along, and avoid having to shift too often.
are there any issues with that?

Interesting. I didn't think idle-up works when in gear, though its probably different on a manual.

Hey, with my lock-up mod, I get engine braking with the auto, so there!

i had the rotary knob type idle up in my old auto surf worked in gear, and i found it useful offroad, could drive round in 4wd lo ratio and the box held back to 1st or 2nd and just idle around almost anywhere without touching the throttle.
