only trouble is, i can't go too far from the tap or the hose breaks!

You're gonna need 'em!! I drove a couple of tracks yesterday, and scouted a couple more on foot with the dogs, and they are all really dry and dusty - the first driver would be ok - but anyone following would just be in a dust cloud.
May be a good idea to leave it a couple of weeks before we all go?? Hopefully it will rain by then, and I can scout a few more so we have a longer route.
