  • winch etc...

I am likely to often go green laning etc... with just myself and maybe a mate or 2....
Do you think its worth me getting a hand winch in the case of difficulties?
Anyone got any thoughts on what sort of things would be usefull for me to take along in case I get stuck or something....?
    cheers

Any Winch is better than no winch and a hand winch is certainly a good start. Other things that are good would be a decent tow rope / web, some attachment hooks (easier than tying on when you are up to your knees in mud). Also a good thing would be to fix a decent rear towing shackle on the Surf (fix it to the chassis somewhere but make sure you can reach it and that it is mounted low enough that the towrope doesn't rip off the bumper.

Also on a lighter note - Camping gas cooker or Barbeque, flask of tea or coffee, strong boots (waders for some of the lanes), money to bribe the local farmers to give you a tow in the tractor.

    Cheers

Are you talking Electric winches or hand winches.

Electric winches you will need a Winch bumper first and then a number are good but get the best you can afford - Superwinch 9000, Warn etc.

Get a 9000 one and then you'll never go wrong, however less will do as the Surf weighs around 2 Tons. You want to get one rated for Double just to be safe I would think.

For a hand winch, I'll have a search on the web.

              Cheers

                Spade

                Hi

Don't forget a good spade. If you get the car really stuck and there are no trees about to attach your winch to, you have to bury the spare wheel and attach the free end of the cable to it. It should give enough force to allow the car to drag itself free.

You can get good recovery equipment from Frogs Island 4x4, they do Black Cat stuff including shovels, strops, towing shackles and bags to put all this stuff in. Also www.firstfouroffroad.co.uk

try going to a supplier that deals with vehicle body builders, forestry companies etc... some 4x4 specialists can be a bit pricey on recovery gear.. e.g. get straps from tool company (screwfix, greenham).

my mate's a tree surgeon and he's trying to get some winch info, so i'll let anyone know when it happens.

nah... best to get a solid attachment to the chassis somewhere...
remember if you're going for a fixed electric wich then it can only be used from the front (if it's attatched there.) if you got something like a tirfor winch, then although it takes a little longer to set up, you can attach it front or rear, either side. and, they really pull hard! (and lower too, if you want thyem to!)
