Guys i don't believe it just got back from work, a short run down the M6 only to find thick blue smoke bellowing from my arse end and the temp needle in the red. I have left it to cool down and removed the thermo housing only to find there's no thermostat present. Put it all back together and refilled coolant and started engine. as soon as it starts to warm up the expansion tank fills and steam comes chugging out from it. Anyone got any ideas. It seems as if the coolant isn't even getting through the engine. If there is an easy fix that i can do tonight i will be there tomorrow. Somebody please HEEEEELP!!!

Could be the head gone. When u refilled it did u have both front and the back heater on full lever the rad cap off when u r filling it up and just keep topping it up. But I would not try to get out tomorrow with it till u know for sure whats wrong. Rochdale is a good drive away from u.

When you say both heaters on, do you mean just in the hot position, or heater fan on as well? Engine running or not?

yes put fan on full and on hot engine running then that should push any air lock out

That generally happens because of a lack of coolant, and the system is designed sensibly enough that it takes it away from the non essential (cab heater) to provide to the essential (engine). When the Surf overheats it tends to dump a load of coolant out the expansion tank and onto the road, thus the level drops.

So it is still possible my head (or hg) isn't shot then, and it could well be the stat and rad cap.
Starting to feel a bit better now
