that second photo (middle one) on 1st page of this thread isnt Stanage, its miles away closer to Edale.
    near Mam Tor

Havent driven these trails, but when i lived in Leeds did loads of mountain biking. I remeber those rock steps on that middle pic, as i eventually managed to bike up them

have attached pics of failed then successful attempt!

Stanage edge was also awesome to bike down - on dual suspension bike!
but dont think i would risk a surf/4runner on it, unless it had lots lift and decent underbody protection.

thanks andy. well i've not been far enough along this track to recognise it but i got these photographs from offroadroutes.com (co.uk?). i know mam tor - otherwise known as the shivering mountain on account of the way that it would dramatically shed large pieces of tarmac from it's slippery shale foundations. i think they long ago stopped maintaining the road that ran up to the top of the Winnets (sp?) Pass (take the road to the right instead of the left past speedwell cavern after Castleton). Is this where you're referring to 'cause I don't recognise this from your photos?

WRT status of Stanage Edge track, some of it is definitely not affected by the new legislation. but so far Sheffield City Council and Derbyshire County Council can't agree who has jurisdiction over part of the track so no definitive answer yet. I'll post it when they've finished squabbling.

This was shown in Total Off road last month as one of the routes unlikely to be affected by the NERC bill. Think it is supposed to be doable in most things that have decent 4WD and ground clearance so an unmodified Surf should do it. Think they did it in a Disco so a Surf should do it no problem as it has better ground clearance or though the departure angle is not as good.

Used to climb at Stanage, great place.
