  • Off road in Iceland

    Hi all of you

I just came across your website, and being a Hilux owner myself, I had to take a look. I see you are doing other things than we do in Iceland, but you might be interested in looking at the web of the biggest Off road club here. (link) I know you don't understand the text, but you might want to look at the pictures in the photoalbum (myndasafn)

I'm driving a '84 Hilux 2,4tdi. Few years ago I rolled the truck, and to fix it, I replaced the body with a Mitshbishi Pajero body. you can see the end result here and pictures of the roll here

Hope you find something of interest
    Emil

Is that a 2nd gen ? It appears to have a Truckman top on the back but no join ? Or is it me ? The tailgate looks like a pick up type with a lifting truckman hatch window .

          Edit : 1st gen or what ?

I guess you are talking about the old body. It is a Hilux and was a pickup truck. Early in it's live, a roof was build over it so looked like a 4Runner. it was about 30cm. longer than the 4Runner so it had much more space. The floor was flat and it was wery easy for two to sleep in the truck with the luggage inside.

                hilux pics

                Hi Emil,
Nice pics! The custom rear roof of the hilux looks as though it was made quite strong- steel? What happened, did you go snowboarding down the mountain?
Do you use wheel-chains in Iceland?

Welcome to the UK Hilux Surf forum!
                cheers,

                  Hi
Yes, the roof was wery strong. I belive it saved me and my passengers from serious injuries in the roll. I recomend rollbars for all offroad vehicles.
I was driving up this steep hill, and on the way down the truck turned to one side, and rolled 3 times.
No, we don't use snow schains. When driving in the snow, we deflate the tires to get as much flotation as possible. On big tires, 38" or 44" we get enough flotation to drive in most snow conditions. The trick is to drive on top of the snow, and sink as little as possible. In many cases we have maby up to 3 meters of snow in the mountains.
This winter has been a wery wet one. The snow is melting because of all the rain that has been here for the last weeks. Traveling in the mountains is almost impossible as you can see on the pictures in this album, taken last weekend on a trip over one glacier and down a road almost in the center of Iceland. The hut and the pool you see on the photos are heated by hot water from a hot spring, so it is always warm and cosy.

                      Hi Emil,
Great site, so what is the best time of year to Visit Iceland?

                        Hi Emil,
What a brilliant site. I could spend half a life timejust looking at the galleries. Some really nice trucks.
I notice that quite a few trucks are running ham radio antennas. I have spoken with a few Icelandic stations on 80M.

The question to the UK Surf community is - when are we going to Iceland??
                        It's only a hobby!

I'm pretty sure I put up a link of a company that runs the trips through Iceland...ferry from Shetlands etc...very expensive trip unfortunately
