  • Morocco and NW Africa

We spent 3 weeks in Morocco this summer - whistle stop tour of the country and we even got down to a bit of the Sahara, Erg Chebbi. Any road, I want to go again however I want to push on down the west coast through Mauri and into Senegal. Anyone on this forum got experience of this area? Would love to hear about your experiences.

    Hi Enzo, long time!

    How iz it?

Are you going to post some Morocco pics?

In 2004 I flew to Gambia, hired a banged up Daihatsu Fourtrak in Banjul, and followed the Senegambia river upstream. I also entered Senegal in the Casamanche region. Lovely people and scenery. Loads of baobabs, lots of similarities with some parts of Southern Africa that you will be familiar with.
I think the route driving down from Marocco through Nouadibhou etc is dangerous, not long ago some ngo workers where kidnapped I think. I would be very cautious as Mauritania does harbour some extremists. I would look for a good trusty guide and people with local knowledge. Also I dont think passage through Maroccan Western Sahara is as straight forward as it used to be. someone I know drove a Renault 4 down to Blantyre down that way, some 15 yrs ago!

    Cheers!

Fabrizio! How the devil are you? Still in Malawi and still surfing? I was looking at that long boring road down the western seaboard down to Dakar, however we loose about 6 days driving back and forth through Europe so maybe flying in and renting could be a plan.

Was the Gambian rental reasonable and was the vehicle in a fairly decent state? Did you collect any contacts, hints or tips?

we might be back in Zim in April 2018 so if your in the area...!

I am well, still in Malawi and still surfing !
Went to the beach in Mozambique last week (half term), which was great.
The Gambia trip was good, cheap flights and the rental was cheap too, from an independent car rental in Banjul. They had a proper office and insured the vehicle etc. It was cheap as we chose an old banger , better cars (suzukis etc) were available. It's 13 years ago so things might have changed, maybe roads are better now...it was a really easy place to travel and very friendly, we were travelling with my son who was then 3 yrs old. .Nice lodges along the Senegambia river, which is great for bird watching. Get yourself a Lonely Planet guide if you decide to go. People speak English. As you cross into Senegal it's mostly French.
April in Zim will be great, why don't you come to the lake and we have an African surfers meet up? Let's hope we get decent rains!

Do you live on the lake? Whereabouts? Thatís a great idea! Weíve travelled through Malawi a few years ago but it would be nice actually spend some proper time there. We only have two weeks and I donít know how much work itíll take to make the 4x4 long distance ready but send me your details and Iíll run it past my family.
