I would like some opinions please the exhaust on the car is due for renewal, due to the bobtail any off the shelf exhaust would have to be modified to fit so i started thinking about something less restrictive. My belief (born out of 30 years plus in engineering and theoretical knowledge is that a diesel does not need any more back pressure than the turbo provides and that the freer flowing downstream of the turbo the better
The easier it is for the engine to pump out the gases the more power is left to push the vehicle along.
But (and it's a bigger but than an overweight elephant) a friend who has vastly more practical surf knowledge than me reports that a surf that had the small rear box removed initially seemed better but then suffered a performance loss including the kickdown characteristics being altered, reversion to the stock exhaust resolved the issues.
Is it possible for the quicker spooling speed of the turbo when "learnt" by the ECU to have a negative effect?
It was always my belief that the small back box was more to do with resonance than anything else.
Please don't simply rubbish my friends opinion because it happened - I would like considred opinions and experiences please.
Thank you.
