  • Colorado Rear Axle

    Hi All

So am am keen on the rear axle swap for my 3rd Gen, and have seen some of the posts on the subject.

The reason I want to swap is for the disc brake option that comes on the colorado axle and a nice to have would be the electric locker.

I have a few questions and hopefully those with the experience and know how can chip in!

I know that it is highly unlikely that I will find a diff that has the same ratio as my truck, and I have seen that it may be possible to put the Surf diff into the colorado axle.

Question is, how much different are they, i.e is there alot of modding required to drop the Surf diff into the colorado axle?

Also, if I did have to put the Surf diff into the axle, what other bits would need changing? The shafts as well etc?

Would the electric locker still work with the Surf diff in the axle?

Lastly, is there any other modding required to the rest of the axle for mounting?

A lot of work for very little gain. Brakes on every surf 2nd and 3rd I have owned have been great, even when abused hard off road.

    Electric factory lockers are not great bits of kit. Keep the axle and spend £500 on an air locker. {adds real value to a truck}

thanks for the reply, I was toying with that idea too.

only reason I am keen on discs is because I have had some issues with mine after a hard day offroading, having the pedal go almost to the floor! So bad the first time, I thought I had done the MC in!

Will have a look at an ARB locker now...

      oi google....

ok, anyone know the model number for the ARB I should be looking for for my 3rd Gen?

Is the RD132 or RD32 correct?

How did you obtain those two part numbers in the first place?

One is for a Land Rover the other is a Toyota fitment.

I remember trying to look this up in the past.

The RD132 I got from an ARB fitment chart, but the chart does not seem to list the 3rd Gen, only the 2nd Gen.

I thought the 132 was an updated 32, but as you say, it is actually for a LR.

If you're worried about your brakes you should do the Tundra brake swap. Bigger calipers and discs and a straight bolt on swap. Did mine and have to brake gently so I don't somersault the truck. Eliminates all brake fade and flutter. Only one small snag is the conversion will only fit with 16"wheels and they need a little grinding to clear the bigger calipers or use slim wheel spacers Best thing I've done to my 3rd gen Surf. Good luck

He is looking for a locker ARB not an ABS system.

However as we are onto brakes now. I have had two 3rd gens and two 2nd gens, brakes have always been more than adequate. I think your original surf brakes must have required TLC if you felt the need to upgrade.
