Presumably it adds quite a lot of weight having to build a frame in that will take the weight/stress?
Not really, the front end is around 100 kilos lighter now anyway.
The front end is basically just a cover for the engine. The cabin is all one piece so as long as the structural integrity of the bulkhead is retained, it will be just as strong as before.
I'll probably hinge it so the bumper stays in place when the front is flipped up like in the first photo.

Cool. Personally I would install a kevlar bonnet and a mechanism for raising it from the cab. This will mean that you are almost unvulnerable to small arms fire from any cars that you are chasing (you may want a visibility slit as well)...
How about a reverse bonnet flip like this one on a mini.......
Hinges at the top and some nice electric actuators to lift it.....
that way when you work on it all the front is accesible aswell......
Yeah I saw that idea but didn't like it to be honest. I would need to make some sort of subframe on the bulkhead just to mount the hinges on.
Flipping the front end forwards enables good access to the engine plus all the stuff removed from the inner wings (except the batteries) will be on the bulkhead anyway..
Yes, yes you're all being very silly, but everything I've done to my truck since 2004 has been copied on here.
Like everything you've done has never been done before? Nothing is original in the car modifying world.
I'd go for it, it looks good. Keep the back of the wheel arches as short as poss, like the 2nd pic, I used to forever bang my head on them on my Baja Bug that had a flip front, and that was only for storage being rear engined.
