hi all, hoping someone can put my mind at rest here. i did my body lift a while ago now and have just started to feel a knocking vibration through the steering wheel if i let the engine labour a bit.
turns out what was left of the rubber grommet in the bulkhead has disapeared so the steering shaft is knocking against the body.
i can get a good 3 or 4 mm play up and down on the shaft where it passes through the bulkhead, should i have any play there at all?

This is summat i got to sort out haveing just done a 2" lift, not sure about the play, i take it you mean lateral movement, along the shafts lenght? i would'nt have thought it was too serious, but you might loosen all three clamps (one of em under the dash, which i did'nt loosen yet) file a bit of metal out where it passes through the bulkhead, jack her up and rotate the steering back and forth to let it settle itself in, retighten the clamps and check that UJ type coupleing at the front just to make sure its not broken up, fit a new grommet in the bulkhead, the play may be in the steering box,
as long as theres no play when your turning the wheel, (or very little) it should be OK

no play at the sterring wheel, if i get hold of the shaft where it passes through the bulkhead hole i can make it move about quite easily making it knock against the bottom of the hole

its possible that youve damaged a uj.have a look and make sure the shaft isnt just moving on the splines.its funny that you didnt get any graunching noises.or heavy steering

Glad I read this - I'll need to make sure I keep this in mind when I do the lift soon

Without lenghtening the steering rod you won't have a lot splines left in the steering UJ's, now I aways sleeve and lengthen the rod so it sits in the splines properly.
