  • Suspension lift / winch - idiots guide

I am looking at doing a 2 inch lift on a '91 2.4td, the rear i can do on uprated springs, shouldn't be a problem.

I understand the front ends on a torsion bar, can i just adjust the standard one or am i gonna lose the handling? Would i better off buying an uprated one?

Has anyone done an 'idiot's guide' kinda thing for this?

Also would like to fit a front mounted winch but can't afford to shell out for a full new winch bumper, can i get a local engineering firm to make up a bolt on bracket/mounting plate? if so can it bolt through the front of the chassis rails or does it need to be welded?

I'm thinkin of removing the air con seeing that it doesn't work properly anyway, might just need gassing but i can cope without it. If i do this can I get rid of the bottom radiator type thing, the one that sits almost horizontal just above the front bash plate as i understand this is purely for the air con anyway? If i get rid of this and cut away the lower grill there's a perfect winch size gap between the two verticals on my bull bar so i can keep that as it looks loads better with it than without. What are the pro's and con's of doing it this way? Come to that what are the pro's and con's of having a front mounted winch anyway? Any MOT / law issues? Weight on the front does it cause bogging or are electric winches not that heavy? Saw a hydraulic PTO winch break off a landie recently and it took three fellas to lift it out of the mud.

Has anyone mounted a winch like this? I'm sure i saw one on here earlier but I can't find it now. Any advice or pictures would be great.!>

    Cheers,

    Ian

Hi.Just wind up the torsion bars abot 1 1/2 inch.jack the front end so it is completely off the ground first.the shocks are no problem the hardest bit is undoing the rear shocks as you are doing it blind so to speak but its not too bad.Give everything a spray up with wd40 or something a couple of days b4 you start just to make sure everything will undo easier

The winch plate is just a rectangular plate with holes for the winch mounts and fairlead. How you fabricate a mounting for it to fit the truck is up to you. You need welding and cutting gear, and some big bits of metal.

can ya mount a winch upside down, was thinkin bout mounting one where the spare wheel would be
and the hole in the rear bumper i would make bigger to fit a fair lead roller to for
the cable to through, all just an idea when i woke up
