  • rear heater mod?????

    Hi folks,
just had one of those thinking moments (dont happy often)
    about a fuel heater mod.
My idea is to convert or replace the rear seat heater unit (back of centre console) to a veg oil / coolant heat exchanger.
Has anybody took this unit apart before - i'm think it will be a small heater matrix feed from engine coolant system, which with some blue peteresque jiggery pokery, may be converted into a heat exchanger for fuel oil. that way fuel stored in exchanger overnight may stand a better chance of staying warmer longer??? and would save cluttering the engine bay????
    any thoughts??
perhaps i'm not cut out for thinking!
    Everyone thinks I'm paranoid!!

You'll still be stuffed on cold mornings, as the veg in the injectors/pump/filter will still be cold, and any coolant powered heat exchanger needs time to warm up.

There is no way to heat the injectors, apart from a block heater on a timer to come on a hour of so before you get in the truck. But these are expensive and involved as you need a pump to circulate the water as well.

The only way to run a reasonable amount of veg in the winter is a 2 tank system, where you start and stop on normal derv, then switch to veg veg/derv mix when its warmed up.

It seems a lot of work, you'd need to box the matrix to let veg flow around it, the rear matrix is tiny, with small bore pipes vs the 16mm pipes you use under the bonnet, plus engine bay is a lot hotter and the veg is nearer the filter/pump etc there.

        Continuation

As mentioned at tail end of another thread, was talking to some Germans, who use between 5 and 10% unleaded to veg oil with no detrimental effects. They said once it gets mixed in tank it doesn't seperate. Veg oil first of course. Anyone tried it or any thoughts on the matter?
Took car to JEM cars yesterday as had loss of power and light in middle of rev counter was on. Blow me down, get in car to take it to garage and its running fine, after doing 900 mile trip at no more than 60 MPH. Error 14, i think was reading on computer. Car just done 102,000 kms so thought to change all belts inc cam and change all fluids etc. On checking, cam belt working, although good time to replace it. On testing computer again, it gave no fault reading, so a bit difficult to repair.
Could some sh*t in filter cause, light in middle of rev counter,to come on and if blocked or partially blocked, wouldn't car have stopped or be very rough running.
Comming back from Italy, car ran fine but would not go over about 2500 revs or 60 MPH.
        Thanks Philip

it's easier to have a fuel heater in the engine bay.

              A) so the fuel doesn't lose too much heat on before it gets there
              B) all the pipes lead there anyway
              C) they're only small so don't take much space
