  • To help the cooling!

I have a 2.4 and I noticed last summer that you can drive a short distance stop and get out, walk infront of the radiator and feel how hot it can get. I've never known any other car to get so hot so quickly! Even when you are driving the car you can have the blower on cold, but you still get heat coming up from the engine bay floor by your feet! So I bought some second hand Escort RS Turbo Bonnet Vents, modifide them a bit, painted them, cut two holes in the bonnet and fitted them. I don't know if this will cure the over heating problems that some Surf's have, but "so far so good" but it wont do it any harm, I did notice after fitting them, I don't get as much heat coming up from the engine bay floor and you can feel the heat coming out of the vents when you stop, so when it is moving the heat will be drawn out because of the angle of the vents, and it looks great too!

The photos did'nt work so I will put them in Members Rigs.

There is a bit of white polish around the edge that I missed a few weeks ago.

The photos added are the underside so you can see how I have attached the Vents.
The Vents have a moulding line around the edge. I cut along this with a Junior Hacksaw, Do not cut off the plastic clip mounts, you will need them to screw down the Vents. Then I sanded it smooth with one of those sanders that are for getting in tight corners.

Make TWO templates out of some card, one for each vent because you are cutting by hand and you won't cut the two vents exacatly the same. If you are not happy with your fist attempt try again, make sure you get the template right.

Fit the the vents into the templates, turn them over, make sure you can not see any light around the edges, the smaller the template hole, the better the fit will be.

Now paint your Vents and let them dry.

Take your bonnet off. you may need to take off the insulation first. I didn't have to.

Lay down a thick blanket or quilt on a bench and put the bonnet on it, then cover the hole bonnet it masking tape. Bits of metal will fly off and scratch the bonnet otherwise!

    Using the templates,
Mesure exactly where you want the vents to go, do this as many times untill you are sure you will cut in the right place. Look cerfully as well trust your eyes! Stick the templates down with tape on each corner, then mesure again to make sure. Draw around the shape of the template then remove them.

Stick down more masking tape around the outline of the hole you are about to cut, Use 2" Tape, make this about two or three layers, this is so you don't scratch the bonnet when using the Jigsaw.

On every sharp bend or angle mark 5mm in from the cutting edge. This is the center of the drill hole. Drill A 3mm piolet hole in all, then open it to a 10mm hole. I had about 6 off these to do on each vent. This is so you can turn the jigsaw blade without snapping it!

Now cut you bonnet up! Remember better too small than too big. you can file away for a better fit later, rather than having to find a way to fill in a big mistake.

File off the rough edges and see if the Vents fit. they sould do if you take you time with mesuring.

Paint the bare metal with hammerite and let it dry. This is to stop rust.

    Remove all masking tape.

    Fit Vents.

Make some brakets to fix the vents in with, I used small shelf corner ones from a D I Y shop, and bent them over a bit.

There may be a small gap around the edge of the vent on the top side, I filled it with flexable filler for skirting boards then painted it by hand with an artist's brush.

I was Sh****g myself when I did mine, coz I have never donr this before, but once I drilled the first hole it was too late to stop.

The white you can see underneath mine is double sided sticky foam to absorb any vibration rather than to hold them in pace. the brackets were made from small shelving 90 degree joints, then bent over at the top, with foam rubber stuck on them, to stop them scratching the under side of the bonnet.

I don't think I've missed anything but I will add anything if I think of something.

If you do this and F*** it up, please don't blame me!

How many pixels should I use? I can go as low as 0.3Million up to 3.25Million.

Good idea my MR2 turbo (other car) works on a that principal that the vents allow the heat to escape from the engine bay but on mine i fitted 2 dirty great fans also to help it so i can see how a similar set up on a Surf would work
They can go fast, I can go anywhere.

open the picture with your editing software, and under stretch/skew you can reduce the image size (i got 4 million pixel and reduce by 60%) then it should work.. i am a ludite so this may not help..

Yep, I done that modification last year but I used Astra G T E vents.
To anyone else thinking of doing this, they really do work superbly.

looks pretty straight forward, but you have to get your head round cutting a dirty great hole in your bonnet.....
i reckon it must be like fitting a hob into a worktop.. mark it up, if in doubt cut a touch on the small side then open it up to suit...

Also check where the strengthening ribs are underneath first before you make any holes.
