  • 200bhp in a Surf !!

Well.......the 2.4TD is out.....& sat on the floor waiting for transplant is a 200bhp Toyota Supra 3.0 i engine . It's a non-turbo 7m series engine out of an 87 Supra . The engine ran sweet ,but the body was rotten.....ideal donor car.
Anyway ,it's not a straight forward job , but my mate reckons he can make it fit
Can anybody forsee any problems with this transplant ??

Some info i was given by an old member.
            .............................. .............................. ..........

The MK1 Supra is very old now but the 5M-GE engine is one of the greatest engines ever made and about a million times better than the V6. I use the 2800cc 5M-GE because as it's a better engine for serious turbocharging than the later 6M & 7M engines - It has 12 huge valves which can flow a lot more air than the 24 small valves in the later engines.

It's very easy to install the 5M in a Surf. You need to buy a complete Supra and strip it. You need the engine. all cables and the engine ancillaries, ECU and wiring loom, the complete fuel lines and the fuel pump and accumulator. You will also beed the rear brake calipers and handbrake cable. Other non-MK1 parts you need are: the oil pan and strainer from a 7M engine (MK3 Supra), twin 250mm electric fans that can be fitted in front of the radiator, and if the car is a diesel you will also need an instrument pod from a 6 cylinder gasoline-fueled car of the same age.

It all fits together very easily. The engine mounts of the 5M engine are 15mm too far forward to fit the engine brackets in a diesel shell but the bolt pattern is exactly the same so you can make up flat plates with offset studs to connect them. The Surf gearbox and clutch fit straight onto the Supra engine and the wiring loom is a fairly good fit too. It's very important to mark everything as you take it off the Supra and to remove all the wiring that isn't needed for the ECU and injection. Connecting it up wrongly with probably kill the ECU!

I had the Surf fuel tank professionally modified to take a 10mm fuel return line and an internal swirl tube and I had the big bore exhaust made by a specialist too.

You need to fit rear discs too. Supra rear calipers, the handbrake cables, the mechanical linkage from the Supra diff mounti, and '80's Land Cruiser II non-vented discs with a Land Cruiser 80 master cylinder and an adjustable pressure limiting valve is about right.

Does have very nice front seats in .
I'm hoping to swap these as well .....as long as my mates not too fed-up by then .
Does anybody know how to release the seat mounts from the runners . This would make the swap much easier. Otherwise its a case of cutting and fixing the feet from the surf mounts onto the supra seats.
Theres about a 1cm difference in width , so slotting the holes should help them drop in the right place .

iirc, aren't Supra engines inline 6's? How would this fit in the engine bay of the Surf?

                  Correct me if i'm wrong.

Yes they are a straight 6 , but they do fit . It's been done in the US & a guy in Holland has also done it . He sent me a load of pics of the swap. He's been running it for 3 years with no probs.
Unfortunately mine won't be happening now.

Hello, here is the guy from Holland, I just signed up here.

And yes I still run the 7M-GE engine without probs. It's a lot of work but it all pays off the first time you pass 6000 revs.

Unfortunately my engine is reaching the end of its life, it had more than 160.000 miles on it (UK supra donorcar) when I bought her and she screams for mercy everyday since the swap was completed. And she still run's on the first click of the starter.
Luckily I found a much jounger 2JZ-GE which I will swap, probably, this summer.

If anybody wants info or pics of the swap, feel free to ask.
